1 year old baby has fever and convulsions

It is quite common for a one-year-old baby to have convulsions when having a fever. This phenomenon is called febrile convulsion in children. Because the body resistance of a one-year-old baby is relatively weak, they are easily infected by viruses and bacteria. The most common one is upper respiratory tract infection. Sometimes the condition is more acute and the baby's body temperature will rise rapidly, which makes convulsions easy to occur. This requires symptomatic treatment and rapid cooling. Physical cooling is still effective.

The sudden onset of convulsions in children can really make parents panic. Because seizures are emergencies, urgent treatment is important. Parents should be the first to implement emergency treatment. When a child has a convulsion, you should first use your fingertips or acupuncture needles to press the child's Ren Zhong, Baihui, Hegu, Shixuan and other acupoints; at the same time, lay the child on his side to prevent vomit from being accidentally inhaled into the trachea during vomiting, causing suffocation.

When a child who has already grown teeth has a convulsion, he may bite his tongue because his teeth are clenched. Parents can use chopsticks or spoon handles wrapped with gauze to make a tooth pad and place it between the child's upper and lower teeth. If you cannot prepare a dental pad in time, you can use a folded handkerchief as a temporary substitute. Never use your hands to pry open a child's mouth to avoid biting your fingers. After initial treatment, the child should be quickly sent to a nearby hospital.

On the way to the hospital, parents should tilt the child's neck slightly back to keep the child's breathing unobstructed. At the same time, they should loosen the child's clothes and quilts, which will help dissipate heat and facilitate breathing. Once at the hospital, the doctor will definitely give the child a strong sedative and antipyretic medication injected into the muscle or vein. After using sedatives, the child can fall asleep, but antipyretic drugs take some time to take effect. In order to lower the body temperature as quickly as possible, physical cooling methods such as alcohol baths or warm water compresses must be used.

Parents must cooperate with the doctor, loosen the child's clothes, and wipe the child's forehead, neck, armpits, groin and other parts with alcohol. Because these areas are where large blood vessels run, wiping with alcohol can easily remove heat and achieve a rapid cooling effect. When applying rubbing alcohol, some children may experience chills, which is normal. Parents should not stop wiping because of this. Physical cooling can be stopped only when the child's body temperature drops below 38.5 degrees.
