Is it normal for a newborn to have cold hands and feet?

The resistance of newborns is very weak, and we need to pay attention to them at all times in our daily lives. Those of us who are careful will find that newborns usually wear more clothes. Because of their weak resistance, they need to be kept warm to prevent them from catching cold. Many newborns have cold hands and feet, and they don’t feel particularly warm. Is this normal? Let’s take a closer look.

As winter approaches, the main reason for cold hands and feet is the poor regulation of the autonomic nervous system and the thinning of blood vessels. In addition, toes, knees, shoulders, fingers and other joints are those that move a lot. They have less fat, so heat is easily lost. They also have fewer blood vessels, making it easier to feel cold, and have cold hands and feet that cannot be warmed up no matter how hard you try. Conditions such as low blood sugar or low blood pressure can easily cause cold hands and feet.

However, experts point out that unless cold hands and feet are caused by a systemic disease, it cannot be considered a disease. If your baby has cold hands and feet in winter, parents can improve this situation by paying attention to adjustments in daily life and diet.

Cold hands and feet are mostly caused by poor peripheral circulation, which is common in babies with physical weakness or anemia. Therefore, in addition to keeping warm in winter, you also need to adjust your diet and eat foods rich in iron regularly, such as egg yolks, lean meat, beef, mutton, fish, animal liver, animal blood products, soybeans, spinach, leeks, black fungus, shiitake mushrooms, etc. At the same time, pay attention to the combination of meat and vegetables to increase iron absorption. Babies aged 6 months to 3 years are at high risk of iron deficiency anemia, so it is important to have regular physical examinations. If anemia is confirmed, iron supplements should be taken in time to avoid delaying the disease.

In addition to iron, you also need to pay attention to your baby's adequate intake of vitamin A, because the latest research shows that vitamin A deficiency is closely related to anemia; in addition, let your child eat more foods that promote blood circulation, such as sesame, spinach, peanuts, tofu, fresh fish, garlic, green onions, peppers, and curry. You should eat some yin-nourishing and yang-suppressing, high-calorie meals in a targeted manner, and you should also eat more fresh vegetables to avoid vitamin deficiency. The winter in the north is cold, so you can supplement with warm foods, such as beef, mutton, dog meat, etc. Astragalus can be added when making soup or stewing meat. It does not affect the taste and can replenish qi and strengthen the exterior.

In terms of living habits, you can let your baby drink water regularly, increase the amount of activity, and soak his feet in hot water frequently, all of which can promote blood circulation in the limbs. At the same time, try to let your children participate in appropriate winter exercise to improve their cold resistance and adaptability, and do not wrap them too warmly.

Newborns cannot move, so their body temperature is slightly lower than normal people, which is why we need to dress them in more clothes. If the temperature of the newborn's neck is normal, there is no need to add clothes. However, if the hands and feet are cold and the temperature of the neck is relatively low, you need to pay attention. If symptoms such as runny nose appear, it means that the baby has a cold and needs to go to the hospital for examination.
