1. Jaundice

Jaundice appears early in children with hemolytic disease of the newborn. Most cases of hemolytic disease due to Rh blood incompatibility will develop obvious yellowing of the skin within 24 hours after birth and the condition will rapidly worsen. 40% of jaundice caused by ABO incompatible hemolytic disease occurs within 24 hours after birth, 50% occurs within 24-48 hours, and 10% may occur after 48 hours after birth. In addition to the early onset of neonatal jaundice, neonatal hemolytic disease is also characterized by a rapid increase in serum bilirubin levels within a short period of time.

2. Anemia

Anemia of varying degrees may occur when neonatal jaundice appears and after the jaundice subsides. It is mainly due to the destruction of a large number of red blood cells when hemolysis occurs. Rh hemolysis may cause severe anemia, accompanied by hepatosplenomegaly, and in severe cases, heart failure may occur. About 1/3 of ABO hemolytic cases develop anemia. (3) Fetal hydrops is common in severe Rh hemolysis, manifested by generalized edema, pallor, skin ecchymoses, pleural effusion, ascites, heart failure, and respiratory distress at birth. Severe cases can be life-threatening.

3. Kernicterus

Severe hyperbilirubinemia can lead to acute bilirubin encephalopathy and subsequently kernicterus. Symptoms include athetosis, intellectual and motor development disorders, hearing impairment and dental enamel hypoplasia.
