Treatment of severe vomiting in babies

Treatment of severe vomiting in babies

It is quite common for babies to spit up milk when they are less than 4 months old. Mothers will find that when feeding their babies during this period, many times when the nipple is put into the baby's mouth, the baby will start to feel nauseous and even spit out the milk many times. What is going on? There is not a single reason for a baby to spit up milk. It may be simple milk regurgitation, or it may be due to physiological or pathological reasons. Let’s take a look at the treatment of sudden and severe spitting up of milk in babies.

1What is the cause of baby spitting up milk?

When a baby spits up, it means that there is a large amount of food in the stomach and it is forcefully emptied. Most cases of spitting up are caused by the immature development of the cardia between the baby's esophagus and stomach, and sometimes it is related to improper feeding by parents. Parents can judge the reasons for the baby's spitting up by the following situations:

2How to correctly judge whether the baby is spitting up or spitting up milk?

The common point between the two is that they both involve spitting up milk, but they are also different. Regurgitation refers to the situation where the contents of the esophagus or stomach are involuntarily reversed to the outside of the mouth. It may be just a burp in the baby, causing a small amount of milk to overflow from the corners of the mouth. The amount of regurgitation is relatively small. Spitting up occurs when the baby's stomach contracts repeatedly after drinking milk for a period of time, and milk spurts out of the mouth like a small fountain. The amount of spitting up is large, and may occur shortly after feeding, or half an hour later. Before spitting up, the child will open his mouth and stretch his neck, with an expression of pain and discomfort.

3 Generally speaking, the following situations can cause physiological spitting up: Reason 1: Spitting up caused by inhaling air while breastfeeding. Gently patting the baby to burp can relieve the baby's physiological spitting up. When the baby finishes drinking milk, since the lower part of the stomach is filled with milk and the upper part is air, it will cause stomach pressure, resulting in milk overflow and spitting up.

Countermeasure: Mom and Dad should burp the baby in time to expel the gas. Hold your baby upright and let him/her lie on your shoulder for at least 30 minutes. Gently pat your baby's back to help him/her burp and expel excess air from his/her stomach. Then raise the pillow and let the baby lie on his right side, which can effectively increase the speed of gastric emptying.

In addition, the baby should hold the nipple and most of the areola in his mouth when breastfeeding. The advantage of doing this is that it can prevent the baby from inhaling air while breastfeeding.

4 Reason 2: Excessive breastfeeding causes spitting up. When breastfeeding, you cannot be sure how much the baby has drunk, so the baby may eat too much and cause spitting up.

Countermeasures: The principle of diet should be small meals and frequent meals. The frequency of breastfeeding can be increased, but the baby should not be fed too much each time.

5 Reason 3: The baby drinks milk too quickly and chokes, causing vomiting

Countermeasures: Mothers should control the speed at which their babies drink milk. If it is breast milk, mothers should press up and down with two fingers to slow down the drinking speed. If it is bottle-fed, mothers should change the nipple. Reason 4: Moving the baby right after feeding causes spitting up

Countermeasure: It is best to keep the baby sitting or holding for a while after feeding, and do not walk the baby around. Do not let your baby turn over immediately after feeding to cause spitting up.

After reading the reasons and solutions for baby spitting up, do mothers have the same feeling? Most of the babies’ spitting up are due to these situations. Mothers should summarize the corresponding experience so that they will know what to do when encountering similar situations in the future. Mothers must take good care of their babies.
