Clinically, according to the different shapes of the sternum, pigeon chest in children can be divided into three types:

1. Boat-shaped chest

In severe cases, the chest cavity capacity is reduced. The lateral X-ray showed that the ribs were separated from the sternum and the retrosternal space was extended.

2. Spherical pigeon breast

The spherical pigeon chest is characterized by the bulge of the junction between the manubrium and body of the sternum and the adjacent costal cartilages. If the sternal angle decreases, the body of the sternum will sink, causing the 2nd to 5th costal cartilages to bulge next to the sternum. Spherical pigeon chest is often accompanied by sternal ossification line, especially the early ossification at the junction of the manubrium and body of the sternum, which can be seen in children 3 years old or even before 3 years old. In general, the junction between the manubrium and body of the sternum is open in 99% of children, regardless of their age. The ossification of the junction between the manubrium and the body of the sternum and the bulge of the sternal angle are called angular sternal bone connection.

3. Unilateral chicken breast

Unilateral pectus carinatum is also called asymmetric pectus carinatum, which is characterized by protrusion on one side of the chest wall, sometimes accompanied by depression on the opposite side. Costal cartilage deformity plays an important role in this type, and the abnormal position of the sternum is not obvious.
