Treatment for children with Asperger's syndrome

Treatment for children with Asperger's syndrome

As parents, when our children become sick, we are all worried. Every parent regards his or her child as the apple of their eye. For this reason, they often take their children to seek medical treatment everywhere in the middle of the night, which tortures the children and many parents. So, is there any good way to treat children with Asperger's syndrome? It can not only solve the problems of children with Asperger's syndrome but also reduce the troubles for our parents. Here we will introduce the treatment methods for children with Asperger's syndrome.

Treatment:

The overall treatment goal of Asperger's syndrome is to manage the patient's adverse symptoms, educate and train them to acquire age-appropriate social, communication, and vocational skills to make up for the skills that Asperger's patients did not naturally acquire during their development; at the same time, through a comprehensive assessment of the patient, appropriate intervention measures are developed based on each person's characteristics. Ideally, treatment focuses on improving the core symptoms of Asperger's syndrome, including improving communication skills or stereotyped behavior patterns. The earlier the disease is treated, the better the overall prognosis. Treatments for Asperger's syndrome include:

(1) Social skills training is the most effective way to enhance interpersonal communication.

(2) Cognitive behavioral training can enhance stress management of disease-related anxiety and explosive emotions and reduce stereotyped interests and behavioral patterns.

(3) Drug treatment, including appropriate treatment for comorbidities such as major depressive disorder or anxiety disorder

(4) Occupational therapy or physical therapy improves sensory integration disorders and motor coordination disorders.

(5) Social intervention, focusing on language therapy, to promote normal conversation and communication among patients.

(6) Provide training and support to parents, especially on behavioral techniques that are frequently used at home.

2. Medication

There are no medications that directly treat the core symptoms of Asperger's syndrome. Nevertheless, diagnosis and treatment of comorbidities associated with Asperger syndrome are extremely important. Drug therapy combined with behavioral intervention and environmental adaptation can effectively improve anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, attention deficit and agitation symptoms. The atypical antipsychotics risperidone and olanzapine can reduce symptoms associated with Asperger syndrome. Risperidone can reduce repetitive, stereotyped, and self-injurious behaviors, sudden outbursts of agitation, and impulsivity. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, and sertraline are effective for treating stereotyped interests and behavior patterns.
