Causes and treatment of perioral dermatitis in children

Introduce the causes and treatments of perioral dermatitis in children. Why are children more susceptible to perioral dermatitis? Children suffering from perioral dermatitis can be very annoying and painful. It has brought serious impact on people's lives and work. In order to enable children to recover their health as soon as possible, we must fully understand the relevant causes of perioral dermatitis in children and know the role of prevention and treatment. The following will introduce to you the causes and treatments of perioral dermatitis in young children.

Older children, especially those of school age, often have red, dry and itchy corners of their mouths and lips, and they like to lick them with their tongues. Many parents do not take this phenomenon seriously. In fact, this is an acute or chronic inflammation of the skin at the corners of the mouth and its adjacent mucous membranes, called perioral dermatitis or angular cheilitis in children. This disease has almost no other symptoms, except that there is a circle of redness on the skin around the mouth, which is black and about 1 cm wide. It looks like there is a dark brown circle on the mouth, which is very inconsistent with the skin color around it.

Why are children more susceptible to perioral dermatitis? What are the symptoms of perioral dermatitis? Many patients don’t know whether they have symptoms of perioral dermatitis. Let’s take a look at them together.

Perioral dermatitis, as the name suggests, occurs around the mouth. Generally speaking, the incidence of perioral dermatitis is relatively high in children, which is mainly caused by factors such as malnutrition and improper feeding. Therefore, the treatment of perioral dermatitis must start with food.

Perioral dermatitis often occurs in dry and windy seasons when children lick their lips and the area around them.

The stimulation of the tongue, coupled with the action of saliva, destroys the skin's natural protective barrier - the sebum membrane. The destruction of the sebum membrane and the reduction of oil on the skin surface make the skin drier, sometimes causing tiny skin cracks, and the skin gradually produces an inflammatory response. Repeated inflammation causes increased pigmentation, so the skin that is often licked by the tongue gradually changes from red to dark brown, forming the typical symptoms around the mouth of children.

The above is the cause and treatment of perioral dermatitis in children introduced to you. Many children have bad habits that can cause damage to the skin membrane at the corners of their mouths. If perioral dermatitis is not taken care of, the condition can easily worsen. Hope that helps.
