Is it normal for a breastfed baby to have green poop?

In fact, parents are quite worried about their baby's physical health, because in the process of taking care of the baby, they tend to find that the baby's body is relatively fragile and can be easily affected by various external factors, causing harm to their physical health. For example, if the baby is breastfed, green stools will appear. As for whether this problem is normal, everyone needs a comprehensive understanding.

Breastfed babies have 3-5 bowel movements a day. The bowel movements are yellow and evenly distributed, or contain small particles. They have a sour but not smelly taste. The stool turns green because the bilirubin contained in the bile encounters an acidic environment and is oxidized by bacteria to become biliverdin. When a baby's stool turns green during breastfeeding, it is commonly known as "burned milk". It is often caused by the mother's restless sleep or mood swings, which leads to reduced milk secretion.

The nurse herself may also feel that when the baby is sucking, the amount of milk flowing out of the other breast decreases. The foremilk is the part with more water, and the foremilk that flows out from the other side during breastfeeding is the foremilk. Hind milk is the part that contains more protein and fat. The temporary reduction in lactation of the mother is mainly due to the reduction of foremilk. The baby sucks less foremilk rich in water, which is equivalent to sucking enough hindmilk with less water. Due to the rich fat content, the amount of bile in the digestive juice increases, and a large amount of bilirubin is converted into biliverdin, which makes the stool green. At this time, the breastfeeding mother should drink more soup, adjust her mood and increase sleep, so that the milk secretion can increase and the green stool will naturally disappear.

Through the analysis of the above content, we can find that if the baby only eats breast milk and the stool is light green, then there is no need to worry too much, because this is a normal phenomenon. However, if this problem continues without any relief, then you should still pay attention and take the baby to the hospital for proper examination to understand their physical health.
