Causes and manifestations of delayed language development in children

Those who have children at home know that a child can roll over at three months, sit at six months, scratch at seven months, and crawl at eight months. This shows that the child is growing up. Generally, a child can walk at one year old and speak short words at around one year old, such as "dad" and "mom". However, some children cannot say simple words even after two weeks. Let's take a detailed look at the causes and manifestations of delayed language development in children.

Causes and manifestations of delayed language development in children

Language delay refers to a condition in which a child's oral expression ability or language comprehension ability lags significantly behind the normal development level of children of the same age due to various reasons. Factors such as mental retardation, hearing impairment, articulation organ diseases, central nervous system diseases, and poor language environment are all common causes of delayed language development in children. Therefore, if a child is found to have delayed language development, efforts should be made to find the cause. If a child has a significant delay in language development without any of the above clear reasons, it is called idiopathic language development disorder or developmental language delay.

The cause of idiopathic language disorder is still unclear, but it may be related to abnormalities in certain perceptual functions of the brain. It is generally believed that it is mainly caused by congenital factors.

Idiopathic speech and language development disorders are clinically divided into two types: expressive language disorders and receptive language disorders. The former can understand language but cannot express it, while the latter has limited understanding and expression of language. When the child begins to learn to speak, language defects will be revealed. The child can make some syllables but cannot form words. He cannot remember common words, his vocabulary is very poor, and he cannot use complete sentences to describe what he needs, so his sentences are very difficult to understand. Children with this disease learn language very slowly, often 2 to 3 times slower than normal children, and their language skills are obviously backward. For example, they cannot call dad or mom at the age of one, and cannot speak complete sentences at the age of four.

People with language delay and expressive language disorder have good language comprehension but poor expression ability. At around one and a half years old, children can understand simple instructions given by others. For example, when asked to get something, the child can understand and take action. However, they cannot express their needs verbally, or their verbal expression ability is very poor compared with children of the same age.

We have introduced the causes and manifestations of delayed language development in children above. The delayed language development in children mentioned here refers to the situation where children cannot speak when they are at the age when they should be able to speak. There are many reasons that can cause delayed language development in children.
