What's wrong with the bulge of the front fontanelle?

The anterior fontanelle is unfamiliar to mothers but also important. Do mothers know that it only exists in the baby's body? It is in an open state before closing and completes growth closure before the age of two. Some behaviors of children may cause the anterior fontanelle to bulge or protrude. When intracranial pressure decreases, the anterior fontanelle will become concave. Then mothers must want to know what are the specific influencing factors and what is going on?

Protruding anterior fontanelle When the intracranial pressure (commonly known as intracranial pressure) is high, the anterior fontanelle will protrude. For example, it will bulge more when lying down than when sitting or standing in the following situations. When crying, coughing, straining or defecating, the pressure in the brain increases due to the exertion of the whole body, which is a normal phenomenon. When you have a fever, the heart rate increases and the blood flow rate and blood volume throughout the body also increase, so the intracranial pressure naturally increases. Encephalitis, meningitis, cerebral hemorrhage and cerebral edema increase the volume within the skull and thus increase the pressure. The anterior fontanelle is the diamond-shaped cross suture junction in the center of the front half of the infant's head. It is the largest suture intersection on the skull. Because infants have not yet fully grown their heads, it is slowly covered as they grow up. It is generally two to four centimeters long and wide for newborns. Because there is no bone here, it feels very soft.

There is also a bone suture intersection in the center of the back half of the head, called the posterior fontanelle. It is smaller and sometimes even difficult to feel. Because the structure of the entire infant's skull is weakest at the anterior fontanelle and there is no bone protection, and the brain tissue is right underneath, sometimes babies with a larger anterior fontanelle can feel something uneven underneath with their hands. These are the lines on the surface of the brain, and if you press hard, it will of course cause damage to the brain. When the anterior fontanelle protrudes, you can feel the beating inside the skull with your hand, which reflects the vibration waves of the cerebral arteries. Usually around six months old, the anterior fontanelle starts to get smaller, and by one year old it can hardly be felt, but it will not truly disappear until around two years old, for example, as can be seen by X-ray.

After understanding this knowledge, mothers do not need to panic when they encounter a protruding anterior fontanelle in their baby. Mothers no longer need to worry that the baby is too active and the protruding anterior fontanelle will have a bad effect on the baby and cause certain potential sequelae. Knowing this knowledge can enable you and your baby to live a healthy and worry-free life, cultivate your child's lively personality scientifically from an early age, no longer worry about the protrusion of the anterior fontanelle, and give your child a happy and healthy childhood.
