Why should jaundice be treated with blue light?

Once jaundice occurs, the best way to treat it is to use blue light. This will help reduce the jaundice in your body. No matter what type of jaundice it is, it needs to be treated according to the specific cause of the disease. Most patients need to take drugs to protect the liver so that their condition will not worsen during treatment.

Based on the identification of the primary disease, treatment is targeted at the cause and symptoms.

Treatment guidelines:

On the basis of clarifying the primary disease, treatment is targeted at the cause, and symptomatic treatment such as relieving itching and reducing jaundice is provided.

Drug treatment:

1. If jaundice is caused by hemolysis, the cause of hemolysis should be actively eliminated. Severe hemolysis can be treated with appropriate blood transfusion.

2. For patients whose jaundice is caused by liver cell degeneration and necrosis, liver protection treatment should be actively carried out. However, since the efficacy of multiple liver protection drugs is not certain, only 1 to 2 types need to be selected.

3. If it is caused by toxic hepatitis, reduced glutathione can be used for treatment to accelerate the detoxification function of liver cells. Drugs such as glycines and potassium magnesium aspartate are currently commonly used drugs to relieve jaundice.

4. In the treatment of intrahepatic cholestasis, in addition to the use of drugs such as prednisone or prednisolone or phenobarbital, ursodeoxycholic acid, etc., if the therapeutic effect is not ideal, they can also be selected or added.

Surgical treatment:

If it is confirmed that extrahepatic obstructive jaundice is caused by bile duct stones, endoscopic papillary muscle lithotomy or surgical treatment should be performed in time; if it is caused by cancerous obstruction or compression of extrahepatic neoplasms, surgical treatment should be performed early.

Prognosis:

The prognosis varies depending on the cause.

1. Light therapy

It is a simple and effective method to reduce serum unconjugated bilirubin. Unconjugated bilirubin can produce conformational isomers, structural isomers and photooxidation products after exposure to light. Among them, the formation of structural isomers is the most important. It can be quickly excreted from bile and urine without being metabolized by the liver. It is the main reason why phototherapy reduces total serum bilirubin.

The most commonly used method in China is blue light irradiation. Place the newborn baby in a phototherapy box, protect both eyes with black eye masks to avoid damaging the retina, cover the perineum and anus with a diaper, and leave the rest of the body exposed. Use single-sided or double-sided light irradiation for 2 to 48 hours (generally not more than 4 days). Continuous or intermittent irradiation can be used until the bilirubin drops below 7 mg/dL and the treatment can be stopped.
