What to do if baby chokes on milk through nose

Every move of a newborn baby touches the hearts of its parents. Babies often choke on milk, and some parents become panic-stricken and at a loss what to do when they see this. As a result, the baby will feel uncomfortable, and sometimes the choking is severe and the baby's life is in danger. As a mother, you should know how to prevent your baby from choking on milk.

Ways to prevent babies from choking on milk:

1. Choose a good posture: The stomach capacity of a newborn is small, and the pyloric sphincter is not fully developed and cannot close to prevent food reflux. So be sure to choose a good breastfeeding posture. The most effective feeding position is when the child lies on his side, with the mother and child lying on opposite sides. The mother can also hold the child at an angle to feed the baby, which will help prevent the child from swallowing milk or choking. Even if the child chokes, the milk will not flow into the baby's ears and nose.

2. Never breastfeed while lying on your back: I want to point this out separately because I have suffered this mistake before. Some elderly people will teach new mothers to have the baby lie on his back with his face up while the mother leans over to feed the baby, which will reduce the pressure on the mother's waist. I tried it several times, and almost every time the child would choke and cry. Think about it, adults can’t even drink while lying down, let alone such a young child. Some old experiences are not worth using.

3. Time to burp the baby: It is generally believed that it is necessary to burp the baby manually. But after taking pictures for a while, I feel that the effect is not ideal. Most of the time, I can't take pictures and the baby will retch. Later, I just held the baby upright after feeding, holding the butt with one hand and protecting the neck and head with the other hand, with my arms pressed against the baby's back. This usually lasted less than a minute, and usually more than ten seconds, before the baby would start to burp.

4. Master the feeding time difference: In the newborn period, babies generally do not distinguish between hunger and fullness, and will usually suck the nipple habitually. Therefore, mothers must grasp the time difference of breastfeeding, and never feed the baby when he cries, so as to avoid overfeeding and vomiting.

5. Provide an environment where your baby can concentrate on breastfeeding: Do not tease your baby with words or use toys to attract his attention while he is breastfeeding to prevent choking due to distraction.

Because the infant's nervous system is not fully developed, the epiglottis may malfunction, and choking on milk is the most common symptom. So expectant parents should not be anxious if they encounter this situation. Just follow the above steps to effectively prevent the baby from choking on milk through the nose.
