Treatment of astigmatism and amblyopia in children

Treatment of astigmatism and amblyopia in children

We know that children are more vulnerable to certain diseases because their organs are not fully developed. In addition, children themselves do not know how to prevent and treat diseases, so parents must do a good job of protecting children in daily life. Once a child has an abnormal condition, they must be treated in time to avoid the disease from worsening and increasing the difficulty of treatment. Below we will introduce the treatment methods for children's astigmatism and amblyopia.

Treatments for amblyopia

(1) Fitting glasses: For children under 12 years old, 1% atropine is used for mydriasis refraction. The purpose of wearing glasses is to obtain a clear image on the retina, provide a good stimulation for the development of visual function, and create a foundation for improving vision.

(2) Suppression therapy: It is suitable for some older children who are unwilling to cover their eyes. By dilating the pupil and wearing glasses, the amblyopic eye can see objects more clearly than the side with good vision, thereby promoting the improvement of vision in the amblyopic eye.

(3) Functional training: Let the child use the amblyopic eye to do more fine work to improve vision. Parents can choose different training methods such as drawing, stringing beads, paper cutting, embroidery, and needle threading according to the child's age and vision.

(4) Covering: When the vision on one side is extremely poor, be sure to cover the eye with good vision and force the amblyopic eye to use more. An eye mask needs to be made to cover the lens. Parents can cover the lens with black cloth. The tighter the cover, the better. It is best to add a layer of red cloth inside, so that the covering effect will be better. The covering time should be determined under the guidance of a doctor.

Surgery for strabismus and amblyopia

1. Muscle weakening surgery: including rectus muscle recession, rectus muscle suspension, rectus posterior fixation, rectus marginal incision, inferior oblique muscle recession, inferior oblique muscle section, inferior oblique muscle partial resection, superior oblique muscle tendon section, superior oblique muscle tendon lengthening, etc.

2. Muscle strengthening surgery: including rectus muscle shortening, rectus tendon advancement, superior oblique muscle sagittal transposition, inferior oblique muscle transposition, rectus tendon connection, superior and inferior rectus muscle transposition, superior oblique muscle folding, etc.

3. Horizontal muscle vertical transposition: used to correct type A or type V horizontal strabismus without obvious oblique muscle abnormalities.

In the above article, we introduced the reasons why children are prone to diseases. We recommend that parents help children prevent diseases in their daily lives.
