What to do if a child gets a fish bone stuck in his throat

Although fish tastes very delicious and is rich in lecithin, which can effectively lower human cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, eating more fish can also help children's intellectual development. But there is a disadvantage of eating fish, that is, most fish contain a lot of bones, and if you are not careful, it is easy for the fish bones to get stuck in your throat. Children usually don't pay much attention when eating fish, so the chances of them getting a fish bone stuck in their throats are very high. So what is the solution for children getting a fish bone stuck in their throats?

Baby swallows rice and drinks vinegar after getting fish bone stuck in his throat? Wrong!

When a baby gets a fish bone stuck in his mouth, some parents will let the child swallow rice balls or drink vinegar, but these two methods are incorrect. Never force yourself to swallow food in large gulps, thinking that you can move the thorn down the esophagus. This will only cause the thorn to penetrate deeper or get stuck in the esophagus, causing more serious consequences.

1. The throat and esophagus are relatively soft. Using rice balls to squeeze sharp fish bones will push the bones deeper and deeper, and they can easily penetrate into the mucosa.

2. It may push the fish bone deeper into the esophagus or throat, making it more difficult to remove.

3. Causing fish bones to pierce blood vessels may cause heavy bleeding.

4. Puncture of mucous membrane causes infection and suppuration.

The correct way to deal with a fish bone stuck in your baby's throat

So how should you deal with a fish bone stuck in your baby's throat? The correct way is to first confirm whether there is a fish bone stuck in the throat. Sometimes, because the child eats too fast, the fish bone may scratch the mucous membrane, creating the false appearance that the fish bone is stuck in the throat. Give your baby some warm water and watch how he swallows.

If the baby shows a painful expression when swallowing, or even has nausea or vomiting, it means that there is indeed a foreign object stuck in the child's throat.

Another way to confirm if there is a fish bone stuck in the throat is to let the baby open his mouth and have an adult shine a flashlight. If a fish bone is seen, parents must not dig it out with their hands to prevent the fish bone from sinking deeper. The patient should be sent directly to the hospital for treatment by an ENT physician.

There is another method. If the fish bone is confirmed to be small, the adult can put a clean finger or chopsticks into the mouth and press the root of the tongue to make the child feel nauseous and vomit. It is best to vomit violently and spit out everything that has been eaten, and the small fish bone will come out with the food. However, if the fish bone is large and if you are not sure about its size, or if you know that it is large, adults must not let the child swallow anything, nor should they blindly make the child vomit. They must go to the hospital in time and let the doctor treat it. Blindly swallowing or vomiting may cause the fish bone to pierce the child's throat and esophagus, causing greater harm!
