Umbilical cord bleeding

Umbilical cord bleeding

Under normal circumstances, the baby's umbilical cord will fall off naturally after a period of time. However, the time when the umbilical cord falls off varies from baby to baby. Most of the time, it will not exceed a week. Some babies bleed after the umbilical cord falls off. Generally speaking, when this happens, parents need to learn to observe the baby's umbilical cord. If the baby shows any discomfort in the umbilical cord area, it is best to seek medical attention in time.

What happens if the baby bleeds after the umbilical cord falls off?

Umbilical bleeding

When the umbilical cord of a newborn falls off, within one month, if the baby coughs hard or cries excitedly, it will cause abdominal bloating, causing the blood vessels in the remaining end of the umbilical cord to slightly open and bleed. There are a few brown or bright red blood stains on the newborn's clothes.

Use 75% alcohol to gently wipe off the blood on the navel, and then bandage it with sterilized gauze. Do not use unsterilized water or cloth to clean or fill the belly button to stop bleeding, so as to avoid umbilical infection.

Umbilical granuloma

When the wound after umbilical cord cutting does not heal, it will be stimulated by foreign objects and small polyp-like granulomas will form on the cut umbilical cord wound. It manifests as a cherry-red swelling in the navel, with tissue ranging in size from rice grains to soybeans, thick, bloody secretions, which stain clothes and do not heal for a long time. If the umbilical cord bleeding of the newborn is caused by umbilical granuloma.

Best to seek medical attention. The doctor will use 10% nitrate corrosion or sterilized scissors to cut off excess granulation tissue, and attention must also be paid to local cleanliness and hygiene. Most children recover quickly.

Umbilical eczema

It is not uncommon for newborns to suffer from eczema, and some babies have eczema on their belly button. Eczema on the navel may cause skin erosion and the secretion may vary.

For this type of umbilical eczema, you can use inositol solution to clean the eczema area, and then apply 40% zinc oxide oil blind, which can have a good therapeutic effect.

Umbilical cord

The so-called umbilical cord fungus is the residue of the umbilical mucosa of newborns. The appearance of umbilical cord hair is very much like a piece of pink meat. It is located in the center of the belly button and has a lot of secretions. If you don't pay attention when caring for it, there will be a small amount of bloody secretions.

Umbilical cord fungus should be treated by a doctor in the hospital.

Omphalitis

The sunken belly button can be regarded as a "hygienic blind spot" that is particularly prone to the accumulation of dirt or water, making it an environment that bacteria love. In addition, after the umbilical cord falls off, the umbilical stump has not yet completely closed and is not covered by skin. If the umbilical cord is not properly cared for, bacteria can grow and multiply in large numbers in the umbilical cord and cause omphalitis. The initial symptoms are redness at the root of the umbilical cord or the wound after the umbilical cord falls off, white purulent secretions, and further redness and swelling of the skin around the umbilicus. Bacteria can even enter the blood circulation through the umbilical blood vessels, a potential channel that has not yet been closed anatomically, causing serious consequences such as sepsis. Therefore, omphalitis in children must be treated promptly.

Neonatal omphalitis can be mild or severe, so it is best to go to the hospital for examination and treatment. First of all, keep the navel skin clean, hygienic and dry. Never apply unsterilized powder or lime on the navel. You can use a sterile cotton swab dipped in 75% alcohol to clean the secretions from the remaining part of the umbilicus or the depression of the umbilicus, then apply 1% gentian violet or 2.5% iodine, and then bandage it with sterile gauze.

Urachal fistula

If a small amount of fluid leaks from the baby's navel since the neonatal period and irritates the skin around the navel and causes local dermatitis, we should consider whether there is a urachal fistula. This fistula is connected to the bladder at the bottom and opens at the navel at the top. When the bladder is swollen and urine flows out of the navel through this tube, the liquid that flows out is actually urine, and sometimes you can smell urine.
