What to do if your 5-year-old baby has toothache

I believe many people have experienced the feeling of toothache. The intense pain is unbearable. Toothache can happen to anyone, not only adults but also children due to various reasons. When a child cries out because of toothache, adults feel pain and are most concerned about the solution. So, what should you do if your 5-year-old baby has toothache? Let’s take a look below.

Teething can cause pain in your baby. Tooth decay can be another reason for toothache in children. If a child's old teeth fall out and the new ones haven't had time to grow in, this can also cause toothache, especially if the teeth are loose or pulled too hard.

One of the most common causes of toothache in children, and often the most overlooked, is a small piece of food stuck between the teeth. This can make the child quite uncomfortable. Whenever a child complains of any toothache, the first thing you should do is to check inside the child's mouth to see where the pain is. You can use a small flashlight to see if there is any food residue inside. If there is, you can floss it out. You can also look at chipped or loose teeth to see if any of them seem to be loose or falling out.

If you have a cavity in your tooth, chewing too hard, eating sugary snacks, or drinking juice can irritate the cavity and cause toothache.

Home remedies can help you manage your child's toothache before you take him to the doctor. Some common methods include placing raw potato or cucumber slices in the child's mouth to relieve pain, and placing a warm, wet washcloth on the child's cheek. Some parents also put mint leaves on their children's painful teeth.

Distracting your child's attention from the pain may sound simple, but it is often very effective. You can divert your child's attention by reading some stories to him or letting him watch his favorite movies or videos. Avoid giving your child spicy, salty, or hot foods, as these foods can irritate already painful teeth. Of course, overly cold food can also cause this phenomenon. When your child is better, you can give him some soft and liquid food, preferably at room temperature.

Warm water can help soothe your child's toothache, especially if his or her tooth enamel is cracked. When your child spits out due to pain, give him a glass of warm water to rinse his mouth. If your child has toothache again, rinse his mouth with warm water again. Adding a teaspoon of salt to warm water can reduce tooth irritation and swollen gums. However, some toothaches can only be relieved by using cold water. Therefore, it is also helpful to wrap an ice pack in a towel and place it on your child's cheek.
