Sunken fontanelle in newborn

Sunken fontanelle in newborn

A newborn's body will undergo many changes from birth to a few months old. A newborn baby has a fontanelle on the top of its head, which will close within a few months or a year. Since the fontanelle of a newborn baby is relatively fragile, parents should not touch their child's head hard when taking care of their child. Some newborns have a sunken fontanelle, which is very detrimental to the child's growth and development. If the following conditions occur, go to the hospital for medical treatment in time.

1. Premature closure of the anterior fontanelle

The anterior fontanelle of a child usually closes when the child is about one to one and a half years old. If parents find that their child's anterior fontanelle closes too early, such as before the child is one year old, then the child may have microcephaly. If you find that the baby's anterior fontanelle has closed, then you need to measure the baby's head circumference. If the baby's head circumference is normal, then there is no need to worry too much. If the baby's head circumference is small, it may be due to the child's brain developing too slowly or directly not developing. Parents should take the child to the hospital for examination. At the same time, parents should also note that if they supplement their children with a large amount of calcium, it will also accelerate the closure of the child's fontanelle.

2. The anterior fontanelle closes too late or expands

Under normal circumstances, the distance between a child's anterior fontanelle is approximately between 2 and 4 centimeters. If a mother finds that the child's anterior fontanelle has enlarged, if it has exceeded 4.5 centimeters, or the child's anterior fontanelle has not closed after the age of two, it is very likely that the child has congenital hypothyroidism, or rickets, and she needs to go to the hospital for examination.

3. The child's anterior fontanelle is sunken

Under normal circumstances, a child's anterior fontanelle is flat. If a mother finds that her child's anterior fontanelle is sunken, it is likely caused by dehydration in the child's body. Especially when the child has a fever, diarrhea and other conditions, it is likely that the child will suffer from a lot of dehydration. At this time, the mother should pay attention to replenishing the child with water. At the same time, if a child is malnourished for a long time, it will cause the child's anterior fontanelle to become sunken. In this case, my parents must pay attention to supplementing the child's nutrition.

4. The anterior fontanelle is too protruding

Under normal circumstances, the child's anterior fontanelle is flat, so if the mother finds that the child's anterior fontanelle is protruding, it is very likely that there is intracranial bleeding in the child, or meningitis has caused the child's anterior fontanelle to bulge. If the mother finds that the child's anterior fontanelle is protruding and is accompanied by fever, vomiting, or even convulsions, parents should take the child to the hospital for examination immediately.
