What should newborns supplement?

We all know that various trace elements are indispensable for children in their growth process. If trace elements are lacking, not only will the baby suffer from a series of growth and development diseases, but it may also cause the baby to develop deformities. Calcium is a very important substance for our body. Vitamin D is used to promote calcium absorption. If a child lacks calcium, he will get rickets. So what should newborns supplement?

Supplementing vitamin D Vitamin D helps calcium absorption and prevent rickets. Starting from two weeks after birth, 800 to 1000 units of vitamin D should be supplemented daily, and after three months of birth, change to 400 units of vitamin D per day. Calcium deficiency is mainly caused by vitamin D deficiency. Oral or injectable vitamin D is recommended. You should start taking four units of vitamin D1 every day at two weeks old until the age of two.

How to supplement vitamins for newborns

1. Get adequate sun exposure. This is the most effective, convenient and economical method. Let your baby play outdoors often. In spring and autumn, you can let your baby stay directly in the sun, and in the shade of trees in summer, so that your baby's skin is frequently exposed to ultraviolet rays. Ultraviolet radiation can promote the conversion of 7-dehydrocholesterol stored in the skin into vitamin D3 through photochemical action. Exposure to sunlight allows the skin to store vitamin D3 for future use and will not lead to an excess of vitamin D.

2. Take vitamin D orally. Except for a certain amount of vitamin D in the liver of marine fish, the content of vitamin D in milk (including human milk and cow's milk), egg yolk and meat is very small, and there is almost no vitamin D in grains, vegetables and fruits. The vitamin D that infants and young children get from natural foods every day cannot meet their developmental needs.

3. If your baby is taking vitamin D-fortified formula milk, calculate the amount of vitamin D based on the amount of milk, and supplement the deficiency to avoid poisoning due to excessive vitamin D.

After knowing what newborns need to supplement, it is also important to note that although vitamins have many benefits for the baby's growth, you should also pay attention to the amount. Eating too much vitamins can cause poisoning. In the future, you can take your baby to the hospital regularly for trace element checks, so that you can know what your baby is lacking and supplement it more effectively.
