Reasons why children lack confidence

Reasons why children lack confidence

The strength of self-confidence reflects the child's personality and psychological state. Excessive self-confidence can easily lead to a child's arrogance, which is not conducive to cooperation with others in a group. However, if one is extremely unconfident, it can also lead to inferiority complex, and even self-denial in severe cases. Therefore, it is very important for parents to understand the reasons why their children are not confident and to provide psychological counseling to their children.

Overprotection of parents

Parents indulge and pamper their children too much, doing many things for them, which cultivates bad habits in children to open their mouths for food and stretch out their hands for clothes. Children become more dependent and lack opportunities to exercise. When they leave their parents to live in a collective environment, they will lack confidence because they have too few skills and lag behind other children in everything.

Excessive criticism from parents

Some parents have too high expectations for their children. They often like to compare their children with other children and blindly hold their children to "high standards". Because it is difficult for children to meet their parents' expectations, they suffer failures and lack the experience of success. They gradually develop a habit of being afraid and retreating and lack self-confidence.

Lack of communication between parents and children

Parents only pay attention to their children's material needs such as food, clothing, housing and transportation, but ignore their spiritual needs. Parents rarely communicate with their children and rarely cultivate their children's willpower and character. Some parents even indulge their children due to their busy work, without certain behavioral norms. The children lead undisciplined lives, lack self-control and ambition, which affects the healthy development of their children's self-confidence.

Bad family atmosphere

Family disharmony, frequent quarrels, domestic violence or divorced families mean that children's material, emotional and intellectual development are not well met. Children grow up in a cold environment, lack a sense of security, and have unhealthy psychological development, which suppresses the development of their self-confidence.

Economic conditions and growth environment

The economic conditions of each family are different. Families with better economic foundations may choose products of relatively higher quality and price when choosing products for their children; families with average economic conditions will do what they can. Children will tend to compare with each other to some extent. When they see other children eating, using and wearing better things than their own for a long time, they will feel inferior and think that they are not good enough. As parents, we should instill correct ideas in our children from an early age and let them learn to be content. There is no upper limit to good economic conditions and the idea of comparison is not allowed.

Lack of successful experience

My success rate in doing things is not high, and I have experienced too many failures and setbacks in daily life and study. Among the many factors that affect a child's success, the biggest blow is "failure". Growing up with a sense of failure will have a great negative impact on the formation of children's healthy personality. They will develop psychological disorders such as loneliness, test anxiety, excessive self-blame, and behavioral withdrawal.

Insufficient capacity

Children, like adults, live in groups. Some children with relatively weaker innate or acquired abilities often feel inferior in front of those with stronger abilities. They will feel frustrated because their conditions are not as good as others. What's worse is that if these children with poor abilities in certain aspects do not receive correct treatment and guidance from their parents and teachers, they will develop fear in their hearts and be daunted by many things, thus creating a vicious cycle where the strong others become stronger and the weak become weaker, the gap between them becomes larger and larger, and their inferiority complex becomes more and more intense.

Physically deficient

Some students who are short, ugly, or physically disabled often experience the disappointment and pain of not being able to compare with ordinary people, and fall into a state of inferiority and self-deprecation; some students who are too fat, stutter, or have irregular facial features are often laughed at by their classmates. What many parents don’t expect is that a survey in Wuhan shows that more than 80% of primary and secondary school students nowadays have low self-esteem because they think they are “not beautiful”!

Changing environment

Some children tend to deny their own abilities and lose self-confidence when changing their surroundings. Therefore, when children move with their families or change schools or go to higher grades, parents should pay more attention to their emotions and mentality, and provide scientific guidance.
