How long after feeding should you put your baby down?

Raising a child is not an easy process because children’s bodies are fragile and they are prone to various physical problems during their growth. Especially for babies who are breastfeeding, parents have many things to pay attention to. Usually babies will fall asleep after drinking milk, but mothers cannot put the babies down directly after feeding them, otherwise the breast milk will flow back. So how long does it take to put the baby down after feeding?

How long should you wait after feeding your baby before putting him down to sleep? This question is often encountered in neonatal care. In order to prevent the baby from spitting up milk, some parents will hold the newborn for 30 minutes before putting him down. In fact, this is not necessary. The baby's spitting up is not caused by these lying postures. It is because the newborn's stomach is horizontal and sideways, and has a small capacity. At the same time, the entrance of the stomach is poorly developed, so reflux is very likely to occur, which is vomiting.

In newborn care, we generally recommend that after feeding, you pat the baby gently to help him burp and expel the air in his stomach. Of course, you can also hold the baby at a 45-degree tilt, which will effectively prevent the newborn from spitting up milk. The whole process will take about 5 minutes, so don't take too long.

The capacity of a newborn's stomach is very small, about 50 ml, so don't feed him too much milk or water at one time, otherwise he will vomit it out. After feeding, it is recommended to hold the baby up and support the baby's buttocks and back with your hands. At the same time, lean the baby's head and upper limbs on the adult's shoulders, and gently pat the baby's back to help expel the air in the stomach. The basis for judging whether the air has been expelled is the baby's burping. This can effectively reduce your baby's spitting up.

We should not put the baby down to sleep immediately after feeding. Be sure to burp your baby to expel the air. It doesn’t matter if some babies don’t burp. You can let the baby fall asleep after ten minutes. But be careful and let the baby sleep on his side to reduce spitting up.
