What should parents do if their children are depressed

Most patients with depression are adults, mainly because they have weak stress resistance. Under the influence of increasing pressure in life, more and more people are suffering from depression. Some children may become depressed due to study reasons. What should parents do if their children have depression? As the children's guardians, parents must observe their children's emotional changes and help them overcome mental illness by talking and confiding in them.

1. How do you know if your child has psychological problems?

1. Observe the changes in your child

Emotional changes during activities can fully reveal the child’s individual feelings. A teenager suddenly behaves strangely and has some noticeable change in personality, such as becoming quieter or more depressed. Even more common than sadness is impatience in children.

Other symptoms include confusion, inability to concentrate, lack of interest in daily activities, or odd behavior. If the above phenomenon occurs more than once, it should be given enough attention!

2. Pay attention to your child’s behavior patterns

If your child's behavior changes dramatically, seems like a completely different person, and happens in different situations, such as at home, at school, or with friends, then you should be concerned about your child.

2. How to deal with children’s psychological problems at this time?

1. Get information from the outside world

Start by seeking information from people who know your child well -- coaches, teachers, friends, or even friends of the parents themselves. Ask them if their child behaves unusually in front of them.

Teens may feel shy and do not want to burden their parents with worries, so they usually confide in trusted friends rather than their parents.

Secondly, consider whether any major changes have occurred around the child. The death of a family member or close relative, whether due to illness, unemployment, or divorce. All of these may trigger negative emotions in teenagers.

2. Talk to your children

There should be regular parent-child conversations, during which you can understand your child’s recent experiences and their own life status. Use a relaxed tone and remember not to interrogate the child so as not to cause dissatisfaction.

You can communicate while driving together, preparing dinner together, or watching TV. Pay attention to letting children speak, listen to their voices, and respond appropriately to what they say, so that children not only listen but also understand.

3. Try to open the window of your heart

Share with your child what you've recently observed about him or her. Maybe you could say, "I noticed that you haven't been sleeping well lately" or "I feel like you've been staying in your room instead of hanging out with your friends as much as usual." Then follow up with, "Would you like to talk to me about that?" or tell a story about your own teenage years.

If your child initially chooses to refuse, don't give up easily. Perhaps it is not easy for children to express their true feelings. Embarrassment or shyness may hinder communication between parents and children.
