What to do if your child has refractive abnormalities

What to do if your child has refractive abnormalities

Children's refractive errors mainly manifest as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. If you find that your child has refractive abnormalities, you must take him to the hospital for medical treatment in time, otherwise it will affect the child's future vision development and will also affect the child's future employment, because some occupations have strict requirements on vision. In fact, parents should not be overly nervous if their children have refractive abnormalities, as they can be corrected step by step through treatment.

1. Look at the external symptoms of your child's refractive error

In addition to the common myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, there is also visual fatigue that children often experience when using their eyes, which is also considered as refractive error.

2. Look at the causes of refractive error

The main reasons are improper use of eyes (children’s reading and writing postures are incorrect), frequent wiping of eyes with dirty hands leading to poor eye hygiene, and children’s family genetic factors.

3. The method for checking refractive error is very simple. The most commonly used methods are subjective inspection method and objective inspection method. There are many specific inspection methods on the Internet, so I will not go into details here. Another thing is to pay attention to distinguishing refractive error from pseudomyopia.

4. Treatment

Treatment methods also need to be treated differently. For myopia, concave lenses can be used to correct mild and moderate myopia. In addition, there are surgical treatments. However, during the treatment process, you must pay attention to eye hygiene.

For hyperopia among refractive errors, convex lenses need to be worn for correction. It should be noted that with the increase of age and the effect of correction, hyperopia will gradually decrease, and it needs to be checked every six months. Children with higher degrees of hyperopia, especially those with esotropia, should wear glasses as early as possible. As the eyeball develops, children's hyperopia tends to gradually decrease, so they need to have a check-up once a year so that the degree of their glasses can be adjusted at any time. In addition to wearing convex lenses for correction, you can also use contact lenses for correction.

Another thing is the treatment of astigmatism. If it is mild astigmatism, no treatment is required, just pay attention to your eye habits. If it is more severe, cylindrical lenses must be corrected.
