What is the reason for baby milk regurgitation

The main source of nutrition for infants is breast milk. If there is a problem with breastfeeding at this time, it will have a serious impact on the child's physical development. In daily life, many children experience milk regurgitation. As a parent, the key is to understand the child's condition and solve it as soon as possible. It is important to understand the main cause. So, what is the reason for baby regurgitation? Let’s take a look below.

What is the reason for newborn milk regurgitation

1. Due to the gastrointestinal characteristics of newborns

The baby's stomach capacity is very small, and the stomach entrance is loose and the exit is relatively narrow. The entire stomach is horizontal, which can easily cause milk regurgitation.

2. Improper feeding posture

Incorrect breastfeeding posture, the baby drinking too much milk or crying while drinking milk can cause the baby to swallow a lot of gas. In addition, abnormalities in the mother's nipples, such as being too large or inverted, can make the baby more likely to regurgitate milk.

3. The nipple hole is too large

If the nipple does not fit well or the opening is too large, the baby may drink the milk too quickly when feeding, and the baby may swallow a lot of gas, causing milk regurgitation.

Generally, a normal and healthy newborn may have some milk flow out from the corners of his mouth after feeding in the first few weeks after birth. This situation is called "milk spitting up". Unlike spitting up, this situation is a normal physiological phenomenon that occurs in most newborns. Of course, a small number of babies may also regurgitate milk due to improper body position adjustment after drinking milk. In general, as long as the baby develops normally and gains weight as usual, parents do not need to worry too much. As the baby grows older, this situation will gradually improve and will generally disappear naturally after 6 months.

What to do if a breast-fed newborn regurgitates milk

1. Change the diaper before feeding and try to move the baby as little as possible after feeding.

2. Adopt a suitable breastfeeding posture: try to hold your baby while feeding, so that the baby's body is tilted at about 45 degrees. The milk in the stomach will naturally flow into the small intestine. This will reduce the chance of vomiting compared to feeding while lying down.

3. For babies who use pacifiers to feed, choose the pacifier of the most appropriate size.

4. Feed your baby with thicker milk.

5. Pay attention to the feeding posture, do not overfeed, do not rush to feed the baby when the baby is crying, do not suck from an empty bottle, and be sure to let the baby burp after feeding: hold the baby upright against your shoulder, pat the baby's back, let him burp out the air inhaled into the stomach while sucking milk, then put the baby on the bed, lie down to sleep, raise the head slightly, lie on the right side, so that the milk can easily enter the duodenum through the stomach, and at the same time prevent the overflowing milk from being accidentally inhaled into the trachea or lungs, causing suffocation, so it is not easy to spit up milk.

6. It is not advisable to let the baby lie on his back immediately after feeding. Instead, he should lie on his side for a while and then change to lying on his back.

7. Do not feed too much milk, feed small meals frequently and do not feed too closely.
