Why don't babies choke on water when swimming?

Babies do not choke on water when swimming because there is a special valve in the throat. This valve can close the airway and will not cause precipitation.

For babies under six months old, there is a special valve in the throat. When they enter the water, the valve will automatically close and close the airway. They will not choke on water and can stay suspended in the water for a while, but not for too long, as this may cause the risk of suffocation. After half a year, the valve tissue will gradually degenerate. Generally, the valve will completely disappear after about one year old, so there is a possibility of choking on water during swimming.

When babies swim, they cannot breathe or spit out bubbles, and they cannot hold their breath like adults. Therefore, they have an instinctive survival reaction. After entering the water, some babies will gradually float up, and their body movements will be like swimming. At the same time, the density of a baby is smaller than that of water. As long as the baby relaxes his or her muscle tissue, even people who cannot swim will float in the water. Since the baby will not have a huge psychological impact on the water, it is easier for the baby to relax in the water and therefore easier for the baby to float.

There are certain benefits for babies to participate in swimming appropriately. It can exercise the coordination of limbs, increase the oxygen consumption of muscles throughout the body, and improve cardiopulmonary function.
