Newborn baby doesn't drink milk and only sleeps

All the nutrition a newborn needs after birth comes from the mother’s breast milk, but what should some mothers do if they have no milk for some reasons? Milk powder can be used as a substitute. The nutrition of formula milk is similar to that of breast milk and is equally beneficial to the growth and development of newborns. The amount of milk a newborn baby drinks every day is not fixed. Most of the time, they eat and sleep, and sleep and eat, so we feel that newborns do not drink milk and only sleep.

What to do if the newborn keeps sleeping and not eating

Since the newborn has just come out of the mother's womb, the external environment is completely unfamiliar to the baby, so the baby will sleep most of the time. Newborns basically eat when they wake up and sleep after eating. If the baby doesn't eat, it means he is not hungry. If the baby is less than one month old and the interval between feedings is too long at night, you can wake him up to feed him. However, if the baby drinks very little milk every day and is always sleepy, it is best to take him to a regular hospital for examination to check whether his reaction is low and whether there is obvious jaundice or other pathological conditions.

Let it be

If a baby is hungry, he will express his emotions by crying. Because newborns sleep 18-20 hours a day, it is normal for them to love sleeping. It is also normal to sleep while eating, so mothers should not wake up the baby specifically to feed.

2. Give your baby appropriate stimulation

If the baby really sleeps too long, the mother can give the baby some awakening stimulation to make the baby regain consciousness and want to breastfeed. For example: gently pinch the baby's earlobes or gently touch the baby's cheeks, tap the soles of the feet, etc. to make the baby excited, so that the baby can have a good sleep after eating enough milk. Note: When doing some small movements to stimulate the baby to wake up, the movements must be gentle, because the baby's skin is delicate and cannot withstand excessive stimulation.

Why do newborns love to sleep so much?

1. Sleep is a protective inhibition process of the cerebral cortex. When the baby is awake, countless external stimuli attack the cerebral cortex. These stimuli are normal for adults, but they are strong for babies. The "thunder and lightning" attack quickly causes the child's nerve cells to become fatigued. To compensate for the loss of cells, babies take a protective measure - long periods of deep sleep.

2. In addition, the secretion of growth hormone in infants increases significantly when they are sleeping, and decreases when they are awake. It can be seen that long sleep for babies is not only for recovering from fatigue, but also an important time for their growth and development. Therefore, ensuring that infants get enough sleep is an important condition for ensuring their neural development and physical health.
