Is thrush contagious to other babies?

It is well known that thrush is a common oral disease in infants. The incidence of thrush is very high, especially in malnourished and frail children. At the same time, we know that thrush is a common infectious disease that is contagious, for example, through trauma to the skin, digestive tract, etc. So how can we prevent thrush from spreading to other children?

What is thrush?

Thrush, also known as oral thrush and albicans infection, is a common oral disease in children. White spots form on the surface of the oral mucosa, which is more common in infants and young children. This disease is caused by Candida albicans infection. The fungus is sometimes found in the mouth and can develop in infants who are malnourished or debilitated.

Is thrush contagious?

Oral thrush can occur at any age, but is most common in infants under 2 years old. If incomplete treatment is present, the disease may recur. People can be infected with thrush through the digestive tract, through trauma to the skin, or even through the respiratory tract. Patients with thrush can also become a source of infection for others.

What causes thrush?

Oral thrush is caused by a type of yeast, Candida albicans. We all have this bacteria in our bodies. It is a normal bacterium in the digestive system, but it usually remains dormant and only occasionally has the opportunity to grow, spread and cause infection. Breastfeeding creates the perfect environment for these bacteria to thrive because it multiplies rapidly in the warm, moist, sugary environment that is found in a breastfed baby's mouth.

Eating sweets, taking antibiotics, not getting enough rest, mental stress, allergies, and nipple injury due to improper breastfeeding posture can all lead to Candida infection.
