Baby takes medicine and has black stool

Babies have weaker resistance than adults and may get sick if you don’t pay enough attention. Once the baby feels unwell, he will make a fuss, and the end result is that the whole family will worry and wonder every day whether the baby is feeling better. Feeding medicine to a baby is not an easy task. The taste of medicine is different from breast milk and formula. Once the baby tastes the strange smell, he will refuse to drink it. Some mothers found that their baby’s stool turned black after taking medicine. Is this normal?

The color of your stool is mainly related to your diet and the medications you use. The current change in stool color is mainly due to the medications you use. There is no big problem with this situation. It is recommended to use these medications normally. At the same time, pay attention to drinking plenty of water and ensure a good rest, which will be conducive to recovery. After the condition improves, stop taking the medication and the stool color will return to normal.

Abnormal stool refers to the frequency, shape and color of stool that are different from normal. It is mostly a symptom of the spleen and stomach system, and can also reflect the cold and heat of the disease, and the prosperity and decline of the body's qi, blood, and body fluids. The basic pathogenesis of abnormal bowel movements is intestinal conduction disorders caused by various reasons. In clinical practice, in addition to understanding the frequency, properties, color and odor of stool, it should also be analyzed in conjunction with its accompanying symptoms.

Unusual stool color

Abnormal stool color is related to disease. The following is the relationship between abnormal stool color and disease.

Grayish white: If the color of the stool is "white clay-like", it may be jaundice or bile duct obstruction caused by stones, tumors, ascaris, etc., which prevents bilirubin from being excreted with the stool.

Black: If you have not eaten pig blood and have not taken any medications that may cause black stools, black stools usually indicate upper gastrointestinal bleeding. When the stomach and duodenum bleed, the blood passes through several meters of intestine and undergoes various chemical changes, gradually turning black. Therefore, if there is bleeding in these places and the amount is not large, the stool should be black. Among patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding, about half suffer from bleeding due to ulcer disease, most of which are duodenal ulcer bleeding. In addition to ulcer disease, gastritis, cirrhosis combined with ruptured esophageal or gastric varicose veins, and gastric cancer are also common causes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

Red: Bloody stools are mostly caused by bleeding in the lower gastrointestinal tract. The lower gastrointestinal tract includes the jejunum, ileum, rectum, and colon. Due to the short "distance" and less chemical changes, when these parts bleed, the stool should be red. If the amount of upper gastrointestinal bleeding is heavy, the blood will not have time to stay in the intestines for too long, and the stool will also be red. But whether it is upper gastrointestinal bleeding or lower gastrointestinal bleeding, there is one characteristic, the blood and stool are mixed together. If the blood is not mixed with the stool, but is only attached to the surface of the stool or partially deviated, or even dripping blood after defecation, this is hemorrhoids.

Long-lasting unformed stool

And if it lasts for more than a week, it indicates an organic disease. Its manifestation is one of the typical symptoms of enteritis. In addition, the symptoms of chronic enteritis include: intestinal rumbling, diarrhea, bloody stools, abdominal pain, constipation, foamy stools, etc.

The main cause of loose stools is spleen deficiency. Loose stools are a functional symptom and most cases, no obvious cause can be found. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is defined as “weak spleen”. Of course, there is no need to equate it with enteritis.
