What to do if your newborn has watery stools

What to do if your newborn has watery stools

After the baby is born, mothers pay attention to the baby's condition all the time. Since newborns cannot express where they are uncomfortable, parents can only understand the baby's physical condition through the baby's feeding, defecation, urination, etc. Because many parents are first-time parents, they don’t know what to do if their newborns have some problems. New parents can learn together what to do if your newborn has watery stools.

1. What to do if a newborn has diarrhea and watery stools

This condition is more common in autumn and winter and is mostly caused by enterovirus infection. The frequency of bowel movements is more than 10 times a day, and the bowel movements are watery, sprayed out, and large in volume. Because babies lose a lot of water, they often show symptoms of dehydration such as dry lips, sunken eye sockets, few or no tears, little or no urination, poor skin elasticity, etc. They may also show symptoms such as lack of energy, spitting up milk, and not eating milk. When the baby's stool is found to be watery, the mother should take the baby to the doctor as soon as possible, and should pay attention to the disinfection of baby supplies such as pacifiers.

2. What to do if your newborn has diarrhea

1. Do not use antibiotics arbitrarily

There are three types of baby diarrhea. Among them, physiological diarrhea and food-induced diarrhea do not require medication, while infectious diarrhea requires medication under the guidance of a doctor. The long-term use of antibacterial drugs, especially broad-spectrum antibiotics, can lead to intestinal flora disorders and aggravate diarrhea. Therefore, antibiotics must be used rationally, sufficiently and in a standardized manner under the guidance of a doctor when the diagnosis is clear.

2. Don’t use antidiarrhea drugs lightly

The misuse of antidiarrheal drugs not only fails to cure certain diarrheal diseases, but on the contrary, has certain side effects on babies, especially newborns.

3. Replenish water in time

For babies who have frequent and watery bowel movements, it is important to pay attention to hydration to prevent dehydration. Oral rehydration salts can be given if necessary. The specific application of oral rehydration salts must be carried out under the guidance of a doctor.

4. Can babies continue to breastfeed if they have diarrhea?

Breastfed babies do not need to stop feeding, but only need to reduce the amount of feeding appropriately, that is, shorten the feeding time and lengthen the interval between feedings. The normal feeding time is 10 minutes on each breast, but it is now changed to 5-7 minutes, and the remaining milk should be squeezed out because the latter part of the milk has a high fat content.

5. It is not advisable to add complementary food during the period of diarrhea

In addition, when the baby has diarrhea, you should stop adding complementary foods. As the condition improves, gradually resume feeding milk and various complementary foods that have been consumed.

3. Changes in newborn stool

About 24 hours after birth, your baby will pass a thick, black substance called meconium. Meconium is the intestinal contents of the fetus in the uterus that must be eliminated from the body before normal digestion can begin. Later, the child's bowel movements gradually became regular and the stool became harder. As long as the baby (baby food) is healthy (healthy food), happy, and gaining weight, there is no need to pay attention to the child's bowel movements and there is no need to worry too much about the child's bowel movements. Different children have different numbers of bowel movements per day, but as children grow, the number of bowel movements will become less and less. At first, your child may have 3-4 bowel movements a day, but after a few weeks, the frequency of bowel movements may drop to once every two days.

Second, this is normal. In addition, the following phenomena are also normal: thin, uneven stools; green stools; bowel movements after eating; sometimes up to 6 bowel movements per day.

4. Stool of Breastfed Babies

After the baby is born, it will pass meconium, which is green-black, smooth, and sticky. Later, the baby will pass yellowish stool, which is normal breastfeeding stool. The number of bowel movements per child is not important, it can be more or less, some may have bowel movements several times a day or less may have bowel movements once every few days. Baby poop is usually mushy or thicker than ice cream and has no odor. Babies who are breastfed rarely suffer from constipation. They absorb almost everything and produce very little waste. This explains why babies sometimes only defecate once every three days. Remember that what you eat has a great influence on your baby, and spicy foods can cause indigestion in your child.

5. Feces of babies who drink milk

After the child's digestive function stabilizes, children who eat formula milk have more frequent bowel movements, and the stool is harder, yellower, and has a peculiar smell than that of breastfed children.

Sometimes you will find that your child's stool is soft, like soft-shelled eggs, but a normal child's stool should be hard. The solution to the problem is to give your child more water: that is, add more water to the usual formula milk. You can also give your child more cold boiled water while feeding him. After the child reaches a few months old, you can add some dried plum juice or filtered fruit juice to the drinking water to prevent stool.

dry.

It is not necessary to add sugar to the milk that children drink. If sugar is added, or if the milk contains a high sugar content, the child's stool will definitely become loose, green or curd-like. At this time you should stop adding sugar to the milk. If there is no improvement over the long term, please contact your doctor.
