What happens when children talk in their sleep?

In life, we often hear people around us talking in their sleep. Sleep talking is very complicated and each person’s sleep talking situation may be different. Some people talk in their sleep while they are dreaming, some people talk a lot in their sleep even when they are not dreaming at all, some people can remember their sleep talking clearly, and some people can’t remember it at all. If children often talk in their sleep, it may be caused by the following factors.

What happens when children talk in their sleep?

1. Brain Development

Talking in sleep is closely related to the maturation of the brain, the occurrence and development of psychological functions. It is mainly due to the incomplete development of the child's brain nerves. Sometimes it is caused by fatigue, eating too much at night, or hearing or seeing some scary language or movies.

Solution:

If the child does not talk in sleep often, parents do not need to worry or wake up the child, and the phenomenon of sleep talking will disappear more easily;

Do not let your children do strenuous activities before going to bed, and do not let them watch fighting and horror TV shows.

2. Liver fire and mental tension

Talking in sleep is also called somnambulism. It is mostly caused by excessive heart fire, excessive liver fire and mental stress. It is more common in children with neurosis and unstable neurological functions. Many people have this situation. They often dream after falling asleep, and talk, sing, cry or laugh in their sleep. Sometimes the sleep talking is coherent speech or narration in paragraphs.

The cause of nightmares is usually due to yin deficiency and excessive fire. The so-called yin deficiency refers to kidney yin deficiency, and excessive fire refers to excessive heart fire. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that insufficient kidney yin will lead to excessive heart fire, resulting in symptoms such as nightmares, insomnia, panic, and dizziness, and some people may also experience low back pain. Therefore, nightmares are mainly related to kidney deficiency.

Usually, we should pay attention to replenishing kidney yin (in appropriate amounts), pay special attention to the combination of work and rest, and avoid excessive fatigue. Eat a light diet, eat less spicy and irritating foods, and eat more heat-clearing foods such as lilies and lotus seeds.

Solution:

Trace element testing can be performed to confirm the diagnosis;

At the same time, be careful not to have too much mood swings, and eat more foods rich in protein and trace elements.

3. More excited during the day

Children may talk in their sleep because they are more excited during the day, which causes their nerves to remain active at night. If this happens too frequently, try to avoid over-stimulation during the day. For young children, this is a way to release stress, so there is no need to worry too much.

Solution:

If your child is too excited during the day, you can let him do relaxation exercises before going to bed to calm himself down, or drink a glass of hot milk, which has a calming effect;

If a child sometimes talks in his sleep because he is nervous or anxious, parents should pay attention to what he says in his sleep. If they can understand it, parents should try to pretend that they know nothing the next day, guide the child to talk about his worries and help him solve the problem.

When your child talks in his sleep at night, do not respond to what he says in his dream to avoid the opposite reinforcement effect. If it is a nightmare and the child starts crying and shouting, you should walk up to him gently, wake him up in a kind tone, let him turn over and change his sleeping position, or let him go to the toilet to urinate. This is helpful to divert the excitement of the dream, relieve the tense mental state, and fall asleep again.
