Child watching TV with squinting eyes

When many children watch TV, their eyes are always facing together or tilted to one side. This is a kind of strabismus. Strabismus will have a great impact on the eyes and must not be treated in normal times. You can wear glasses to correct it. If necessary, you can check if there is any problem with your vision recently. It is not recommended to have surgery too early, but follow up early.

Due to the particularity of children's strabismus, many children's strabismus can be treated by wearing glasses. Therefore, an essential step in treating strabismus in children is to use atropine eye ointment to dilate the pupil and perform eye examination.

Considering the close relationship between accommodation and strabismus, hyperopia is prone to esotropia, and myopia is prone to exotropia. In addition, good vision is the basis for normal retinal correspondence and fixation of both eyes. Different vision can also cause strabismus and amblyopia. It can be seen that strabismus, amblyopia and refractive errors are closely related, so mydriasis refraction is the first step in examining children for strabismus.

Wearing glasses to correct refractive error is an important method for treating strabismus in children. For children with strabismus who have high hyperopia and refractive errors, especially those who develop the condition at the age of 2 to 3, hyperopia correction glasses are particularly effective. Wearing appropriate glasses can correct the excessive accommodation of the eyes and restore the convergence power to normal. For many children, esotropia can be completely corrected after only wearing glasses for a period of time.

Optometry for children with strabismus must be performed after full ciliary muscle paralysis, that is, full pupil dilation, because children's ciliary muscles are very strong and have strong accommodation ability, and it is easy for accommodation to cover up the true refractive power, especially for hyperopic refractive error. Optometry without dilating the pupil is inaccurate.

Another reason why children with strabismus need mydriasis refraction and glasses fitting is that many children with strabismus also have amblyopia. A small number of them are caused by strabismus, but most of them are caused by refractive errors or anisometropia or a combination of two or more reasons. In addition to treating strabismus, amblyopia also needs to be treated. The primary method of examining and treating amblyopia is mydriasis refraction and glasses fitting.

Wearing glasses is by no means a universal "panacea" for treating strabismus. Many cases of strabismus, strabismus with very low degree of hyperopia, and most cases of exotropia cannot be cured by wearing glasses in many cases. If such strabismus patients just wear a pair of useless glasses and do not seek other treatments, it may have the opposite effect of delaying the disease.
