Is it harmful to push medicine into the anus of children?

When children are at home, it is the most difficult time for parents. Although there are many kinds of special medicines for children, since children are relatively young and are resistant to many medicines, it is very difficult to feed them medicine. Therefore, there is the method of anal medication. However, many parents are not particularly confident about this method and often ask whether it is harmful to push medicine into their children's anus.

1. Rectal medication for children is also called rectal medication

The permeability of the rectal mucosa is very good and it is full of blood vessels, so drugs can be easily absorbed into the blood. The effects of the drug are apparent within minutes of use. In order to reduce the pain of taking medicine and also to control the rate of drug absorption in the rectum, suppositories are mostly made into wax and shaped like bullets. At present, commonly used suppository drugs can not only treat local diseases of the anus and rectum, but also treat vomiting (such as: dimenhydrinate), control body temperature (such as: Tylenol), etc.

2. Special anal suppositories

Some medicines can be administered through the anus to solve the problem of babies having difficulty taking medicines. Some medicines that are not for anal use will irritate the rectum when administered through the anus. Although there are no side effects in the short term, whether there will be side effects in the long term is now a controversy.

2. Precautions for children to use anus medication

When inserting medicine into a child's anus, be careful not to break the baby's anus. Be gentle and use the correct posture. Let the child lie on his side, spread his buttocks, gently insert the medicine into the anus, and then hold the child sideways for a while. After the medicine is absorbed, put the child down to prevent it from leaking out.
