What should I do if my child has asymmetrical eyes?

Many parents will find that their baby's eyes are asymmetrical, and then they will become very anxious, fearing that there will be problems with the development of their child's facial contours. In fact, for very young babies, their bodies are still in a stage of rapid development, and many aspects will change in the future, so don't worry, it may be a normal phenomenon. You can also take the following solutions.

What should I do if my child has asymmetrical eyes?

When children are young, especially under one year old, it is quite common for the eyes to have asymmetric visual angles because the eye muscles are not yet well developed. This phenomenon usually becomes stable when they are over three years old.

It is recommended that children go to the hospital regularly to check their eyesight and strabismus. If there are any abnormalities, adjustments can be made in time.

It's cross-eyes. In the first few months after birth, the baby's eye muscles, especially some muscles that regulate eye movements, are not fully developed, and the ability of both eyes to coordinate movements is poor. Babies are usually accustomed to observing things and communicating with their parents with a deep and unblinking gaze.

In addition, the baby's nasal bones are not developed during infancy and the distance between the eyes is relatively close. Young parents always feel that their babies' eyes are crossed when they look into each other's eyes.

In fact, this is a temporary and normal physiological phenomenon for most children. Generally, the baby's ability to focus both eyes together will develop well after 2-3 months.

During this period, if parents are not diligent in caring for their baby, it may induce or aggravate strabismus and cross-eyes in the baby. For example, often only letting the baby look at the light from one side, not paying attention to changing the baby's position frequently; or hanging the toys on the crib too close, so that the baby's eyes are often focused on nearby objects, etc.

Therefore, parents should pay attention to changing the baby's sleeping position so that the direction of light projection changes frequently. Today the baby sleeps with the head on the left, tomorrow the baby sleeps on the right, and switches every other day. This will prevent the child's eyes from often turning to one side.

The colorful toys on the crib should not be hung too close, at least 1 meter away. You can also hang more than one at different angles to prevent the baby from paying attention to only one point. This can prevent the baby from squinting or crossing his eyes. Of course, as the baby's facial bones develop, especially the eye sockets and nasal bones, pseudo-enophthalmos (cross-eyed) will gradually disappear. If your baby already has crossed eyes or strabismus, you should guide him to look in multiple directions to correct it. If there is no improvement by the age of 3-4, you should see an ophthalmologist for treatment.
