How to properly deal with convulsions caused by fever in babies?

The baby's physical development is not yet complete, and once he has a fever, it is very easy to cause convulsions. Many novice parents will feel nervous, worried, and afraid about this situation. When the baby has a fever and has whole body convulsions, he must be sent to the nearest doctor for emergency treatment. On the way to the doctor, be careful not to hold the child too tightly, and pay attention to whether the child's teeth are clenched to avoid biting the tongue.

Children are more likely to have convulsions when their fever reaches over 39 degrees Celsius, but some children may have convulsions at 38 degrees Celsius, or even without a fever. This is related to the child's overall condition, especially factors such as calcium deficiency or epilepsy.

What to do if your baby has a fever and convulsions

When children have a fever, it is easy to cause brain dysfunction and symptoms such as unconsciousness and whole body convulsions. Repeated convulsions can cause brain cell damage and affect the intellectual development of children. Therefore, no matter what causes the fever, it should be cooled down reasonably to avoid convulsions caused by excessive body temperature.

One thing to note is that if the patient initially has a high fever convulsion but then has a low fever or even convulsions without fever, it is not a normal heat convulsion and a doctor must be consulted.

Causes of fever in children

1. External factors: Children's body temperature is affected by the external environment, such as wearing too many clothes when it is hot, drinking too little water, and poor ventilation in the room.

2. Internal factors: illness, cold, tracheitis, sore throat or other diseases.

3. Other factors: such as preventive injections, including measles, cholera, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus and other reactions.

Fever is only one symptom of the disease, not all of it. Parents should not blindly seek to reduce fever or treat fever symptoms, but should follow the doctor's advice, accurately find out the real cause of the fever, and prescribe the right medicine.

Physical cooling methods for babies with fever

1. Cold wet compress on the head: Soak a soft towel in 20℃ - 30℃ cold water, squeeze it slightly to prevent dripping, fold it and place it on the forehead, change it every 3-5 minutes.

2. Wipe with warm water or take a warm bath: Wipe the child's head, armpits, limbs with a warm, wet towel or take a warm bath, scrub the skin more to promote heat dissipation.

3. Ice compress: You can use a small amount of ice compress appropriately, and apply ice or cold compress to the baby's forehead, both sides of the neck, armpits, groin and other large blood vessels. But be sure to wrap a layer of cloth around the ice bag to prevent local frostbite on the baby's skin, and babies under 6 months old should not be given ice compresses. There is still much controversy about the pros and cons of this approach. It is generally believed that ice compresses do more harm than good, because they may cause the capillaries in the baby's skin to contract, hindering heat dissipation and causing the body temperature to be higher. Especially if accompanied by chills or shivering, ice compresses should not be used.

4. Alcohol bath: This method has been abandoned. Babies' skin is very thin and alcohol is highly permeable, so it may be absorbed into the blood through the skin. Moreover, alcohol baths can also irritate the skin, causing capillaries to contract, hindering heat dissipation, and causing the body temperature to be higher.
