How many days will it take for a baby to recover from diarrhea?

It is common for babies to have diarrhea because their digestive systems are not fully developed. If they do not have an adequate diet, they are very likely to have diarrhea. The cold weather during the change of seasons can also cause diarrhea in babies. However, when the baby has a minor illness, parents will be particularly worried. So how many days will it take for the baby to recover from diarrhea?

Babies have a limited digestive capacity. If they eat more food than they can handle, they will suffer from diarrhea. Due to differences in eating habits, health conditions and individual differences, the nutrients (mainly fat) contained in some mothers' breast milk exceed the baby's needs, which will cause diarrhea in the baby, which is usually called "physiological diarrhea." If the baby has no other symptoms except increased frequency of bowel movements, has a good appetite, does not vomit, and his growth and development are not affected, then it is not caused by any disease. After adding complementary foods, the bowel movements will gradually return to normal, and the mother does not need to worry too much. Babies with "physiological diarrhea" do not need medication, and generally the effect will be achieved by changing the baby's diet to milk or other dairy products. If you don't want to wean your baby, you can shorten the time of each feeding and let your baby only eat the first half of the milk which is high in protein and low in fat. This can also improve the situation. If necessary, the mother can drink a large cup of light salt water half an hour to an hour before breastfeeding to dilute the breast milk, and then feed the baby.

1. Adjust your diet:

(1) Mild or non-infectious diarrhea (generally no fever or other symptoms of infection or poisoning, no mucus, pus or blood in the stool, no obvious abnormality in laboratory tests, or only a small amount of fat globules) should reduce the amount of milk fed and extend the interval between feedings, and suspend or reduce complementary feeding. For bottle-feeding, you can temporarily give diluted milk, rice soup and other easily digestible foods, and then gradually increase the amount of milk.

(2) When severe diarrhea requires infusion, fasting for 6-12 hours or longer is required. After vomiting and diarrhea have subsided, the patient can gradually resume eating, from less to more, from thinner to thicker. Mild cases may require 3-4 days, while severe vomiting and diarrhea may require 5-10 days before normal diet can be resumed.

2. Strengthen care: Pay attention to the nature of vomiting and diarrhea and record the frequency and amount as well as urination time and urine volume. Change diapers frequently, wash buttocks frequently, and prevent urinary tract infection and diaper dermatitis.

3. Control infection: Use antibiotics according to the situation of intestinal infection, mainly to control Escherichia coli. The current medications include co-trimoxazole (children's tablets), 1-2 tablets each morning and evening for children aged 2-6 years (double the dose for the first dose), 2-4 tablets each morning and evening for children aged 6-12 years or berberine 5-10 mg/kg, taken orally in 2 doses. Neomycin, furazolidone, pipemidic acid, etc. can also be used. If the poisoning symptoms are severe, ampicillin and gentamicin can be injected intramuscularly. If the medication is ineffective after 2-3 days, you can replace or add another drug. For Staphylococcus aureus infection, you can use new penicillin II or erythromycin. For viral infection, you can use malopasco, the Chinese medicine isatis indigotica and isatis root. For fungal infection, you can use nystatin, clotrimazole, and extraintestinal infectious diarrhea, and corresponding treatment for extraintestinal infection.
