Can cleft lip and palate be seen by ultrasound? A must-see for expectant mothers

I believe everyone is familiar with cleft lip and palate. This disease has a huge impact on children. This disease can actually be identified during B-ultrasound examination. When you are pregnant, you can go to the hospital frequently for B-ultrasound examination, which can prevent the birth of a deformed fetus.

1. Since the cause of cleft lip is not very clear, its prevention is also quite difficult . Because there are too many factors that may affect your condition, simply paying attention to preventing colds and fevers and staying away from radiation cannot effectively guarantee that you will stay away from cleft lip. Fortunately, current B-ultrasound technology can already identify whether the fetus in the mother's womb has cleft lip when the fetus is 20-28 weeks old, provided that the child's face is facing the front of the mother's body. If it is facing the mother's spine, the examination cannot be performed. If the cleft lip is found to be severe, the pregnant woman can choose to terminate the pregnancy.

2. In addition, some medical experts have pointed out that the B-ultrasound for checking cleft lip mainly refers to color ultrasound, and there must be sufficient amniotic fluid near the fetus's head during the B-ultrasound examination. If these conditions are met, more than 90% of fetuses with cleft lip can be screened out. Since it is not a fatal deformity, cleft lip detection is not currently included in routine prenatal examinations.

3. Although cleft lip is not a genetic disease, medicine has found that it has a certain genetic tendency. If there is a close relative with cleft lip, the child is more likely to develop the disease. However, so far, the medical community has no specific data to confirm this probability, nor has there been any conclusive statement. According to experts, the probability of cleft lip recurring is very small, and many children with cleft lip have no family history of the disease.
