Neonatal jaundice usually appears 2-3 days after birth, reaches its peak on the 4th to 7th day, and disappears within half a month unless there are special circumstances. This type of jaundice is a physiological phenomenon in the neonatal period and is called physiological jaundice. Generally speaking, physiological jaundice in newborns does not require special treatment and can be allowed to subside and disappear naturally.

However, for a small number of newborns, jaundice progresses too quickly, lasts too long, or the serum bilirubin value exceeds the physiological range. We must pay attention to finding the cause and treat it as pathological jaundice for causal and symptomatic treatment.

Medication is not the only method for symptomatic treatment of neonatal jaundice. The simplest non-drug method is sunbathing. Sunbathing utilizes the ultraviolet rays of sunlight to promote the excretion of unconjugated bilirubin, thereby helping to reduce jaundice. In addition, sunbathing can convert 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin of newborns into vitamin D, which is beneficial to promote calcium utilization.

The method of sunbathing is very simple. When there is sunlight but the light is not too strong, there is no strong wind, and it is not too cold, open the window 1-2 times a day for half an hour to one hour each time. While keeping warm, expose the newborn's skin to the sun.
