What causes amblyopia in children?

Amblyopia in children is an eye disease that seriously endangers children's visual function. If it is not treated in time, it may develop into poor vision or eye disease. Currently, the standard for amblyopia in children is that the corrected visual acuity still does not reach 1.0. It is understood that the incidence of amblyopia among children in my country is very high, which directly threatens the healthy growth and development of children. Having said so much, what exactly is amblyopia in children?

Amblyopia refers to the condition in which the corrected visual acuity of one or both eyes does not reach 1.0 even though there is no obvious organic lesion in the eyeball. At present, the standard for amblyopia in my country is corrected visual acuity ≤ 0.8 or a visual acuity difference between the two eyes ≥ 2 lines. Amblyopia is an eye disease that seriously endangers children's visual function. If children's myopia is not effectively controlled, it is easy to develop into high myopia and produce a series of pathological changes, which will lead to incurable blindness when they enter middle age or old age.

According to statistics, more than 30% of elderly blindness is caused by scleral stretching due to high myopia, resulting in serious complications such as glaucoma and cataracts. If children's strabismus and amblyopia are not treated promptly in the early stages, they may develop into low vision or blindness.

"Early detection, early treatment." The younger the age, the greater the chance of vision regrowth and the better the effect. Treatment can be started as early as 1 to 2 years old. For refractory amblyopia, the treatment effect is poor if the child is over 6 years old, and it is basically ineffective if the child is over 12 years old, so it must not be delayed. Experts remind parents that parents should establish the awareness of taking their children for regular eye examinations. Once they find any problems with their children's eyes, such as their eyes staring, their eyes cannot follow the target, or there is nystagmus, they should immediately go to the hospital to see an ophthalmologist for examination.

To treat amblyopia, the first thing to solve is the problem of eye refraction. You can wear glasses according to the actual situation. In addition, the most important way to prevent amblyopia in children is to maintain good living habits. For example, try not to stay up late, watch TV from 2 meters away, and do not play computer games all night. The above is an introduction to the relevant situation of amblyopia in children.
