Causes and treatment of decreased appetite in newborns

Causes and treatment of decreased appetite in newborns

There are many reasons for the decreased appetite and loss of appetite in newborns. The subjective situation is not so serious, mainly manifested in the child's emotional problems, eating too much snacks on a regular basis and making meals tasteless. Objectively, there are physical problems with the child, insufficient chewing ability, and loss of appetite over time. There are also some diseases, parasites, and gastric ulcers, which are relatively common situations.

1. Bad habits and eating arrangements: I have developed a habit of eating snacks, which makes meals taste bland. Improper ways of giving snacks, irregular meal times, and drinking too much milk, juice, or other beverages before meals can all cause babies to lose their appetite when eating.

2. Insufficient chewing ability and unreasonable addition of complementary foods. Some children have not practiced chewing since childhood and swallow everything whole. If they encounter slightly hard food, they either spit it out or hold it in their mouths. In order to get their children to swallow food, parents feed them large amounts of soup to dilute the stomach acid. Over time, the child's appetite decreases.

3. Poor physical and emotional condition: If the baby is not active enough, the food has not been fully digested and there is no feeling of hunger. The baby is too tired or overexcited and wants to sleep during meals or has no appetite, which affects his appetite.

4. Severe loss of appetite accompanied by the following conditions should be considered as a possible disease:

Severe loss of appetite accompanied by mental depression and low fever may be caused by tuberculosis infection; severe loss of appetite accompanied by abdominal pain, bloody stools, etc. may be caused by gastrointestinal ulcers, parasitic infections, etc.; in addition to loss of appetite, there are also phenomena such as slow reaction, rough skin and poor development, which may be hypothyroidism; severe loss of appetite accompanied by sweating, skull softening, etc. may be caused by rickets; full-term newborns refusal to eat often indicates a serious illness, and attention should be paid to meningitis, sepsis, etc.

5. Two tips to stimulate your baby’s appetite

1. Supplementation of trace elements: Babies often show symptoms of slow growth, loss of appetite, dull or even loss of taste, poor healing of skin wounds, and susceptibility to infection. If your baby has any of these symptoms, you should take your baby to the hospital immediately. If he is deficient in zinc, etc., supplementing with trace elements can fundamentally treat the disease and increase appetite.

2. From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, the use of spleen-strengthening and appetite-stimulating drugs is related to the poor spleen and stomach function of children. For treatment, spleen-strengthening and appetite-stimulating drugs can be taken, such as Xiaoerkang and Xiaoerxishi syrup. Some Chinese patent medicines also have this effect. At the same time, parents can also take their babies to a Chinese medicine practitioner for massage, which is also very effective.

It is crucial to stimulate the baby's appetite, whether it is due to subjective or objective reasons. Analyze the reasons for the child's decreased appetite, subjectively take measures to control the amount of snacks the child eats, and objectively use some spleen-strengthening and appetite-stimulating drugs to help solve the problem. If the problem is serious, go to the hospital in time to determine the cause and prescribe the right medicine.
