How to treat baby seborrheic dermatitis?

Currently, most families have only one baby, and the family members take good care of the baby. However, when the baby is just born, there will always be some problems of one kind or another. Seborrheic dermatitis is a stubborn skin disease that troubles babies. Many parents are very anxious, but do not know how to deal with this disease. Let me tell you what to do when you encounter this situation!

Some newborns have large patches of yellow-gray fish-scale-like dandruff on their scalps. They accumulate into lumps, are greasy, and cannot be washed off. Some of them spread to the eyebrow area, nose wings, etc., which are irritating and itchy, making the newborns irritable and restless and affecting their sleep. Some people call it "cow dung head", meaning that this dandruff looks like dried cow dung. In medicine, it is called "seborrheic dermatitis". This is because the newborn is affected by the mother's estrogen, which causes the sebaceous glands to secrete vigorously. Newborns with seborrheic dermatitis have increased skin sensitivity, higher exudativeness, and are prone to allergies.

Seborrheic dermatitis is common in obese newborns and often occurs in areas rich in sebaceous glands and sweat glands, especially the scalp, eyebrows, behind the ears, and occasionally on the trunk. Generally there is no obvious inflammation, only gray-yellow or brown-yellow greasy crusts or scales of varying thickness accumulate locally. At the beginning, there are many papules, which gradually expand into irregular red and yellow macules. With the exudate and scales, scabs are formed, which are slightly itchy and come and go. In severe cases, there is a lot of exudate and it is easy to get infected into pustules.

The cause of neonatal seborrheic dermatitis is still unclear, but it may be related to the more active sebaceous gland function due to the influence of maternal endocrine. During treatment, it should be noted that the dirty scabs and scales on the affected area should not be washed with soapy water. You can wipe the skin with a cotton ball dipped in peanut oil or rapeseed oil containing 2% salicylic acid several times a day to remove the scab, and then apply a cream or ointment containing antibiotics and corticosteroids. You can also apply 30% white mercury ointment, and take riboflavin or vitamin B complex orally.

If a newborn develops this skin disease, it is best to take the child to the hospital for examination first. Do not blindly give the child some medicine. The skin of the newborn is very delicate. If the medicine is used improperly, it is very likely to make the child's condition more serious and even infection may occur. Be sure to be cautious.
