What’s wrong with my baby’s scrotum swelling?

Scrotal swelling in babies is a disease that many parents tend to ignore, which leads to delay in the best time for treatment, causing the baby to suffer from other types of diseases later. Because everyone does not know much about this disease, I will show you what the following professional doctors say, so that parents can also have a more preliminary understanding.

The doctor told the mother that many reasons can cause the baby's scrotal swelling, however, the most common conditions are hydrocele and hernia. When a normal male baby is born, there is a sac called "processum vaginalis" in the scrotum that should close on its own and become an extremely thin fibrous cord, a small part of which forms the proper tunica vaginalis outside the testicle.

However, if this sac does not close on its own when the baby is born, it will communicate with a very small hole in the peritoneal cavity, causing the peritoneal fluid to flow into the sac and, together with the secretions of the scrotal wall, form a neonatal hydrocele, causing the baby's scrotum to visibly swell.

What is hernia? Pediatric hernia is more common in male babies. One type of hernia is congenital, that is, after the testicles descend to the scrotum, the processus vaginalis fails to close, thus forming a hernial sac called a blind bag; the other type is acquired, because in infancy, some babies' abdominal wall muscles are not fully developed, and the abdominal wall is also relatively loose. When the abdominal pressure increases, such as crying or strenuous activity, the intestinal tube in the abdominal cavity protrudes from the inguinal canal to the abdominal wall and enters the scrotum, causing the scrotum to become swollen.

Symptoms of hydrocele and hernia Hydrocele usually presents as one-sided swelling, manifested by enlargement of the scrotum on the affected side, presenting a cystic swelling. The small ones are only the size of a quail egg, but if the disease lasts for a long time, the large amount of fluid accumulated in the tunica vaginalis can make it become as big as a fist, thus causing the penis to retract into the skin.

Therefore, parents and friends must be especially careful. If not treated in time, the child’s pain may become more serious, so it is necessary to discover and treat it in time. In normal times, you should also pay more attention to the child’s daily life and diet, so that it can be cured fundamentally.
