What’s wrong with my baby’s abdominal bloating?

Newborn babies and very young infants usually have relatively large bellies. Many mothers get scared when they first see this, thinking that their children have some abnormal diseases. But in fact, this situation is quite common, because the child’s belly is relatively prominent. However, if the child has an obviously swollen belly, the mother should pay attention to it in time.

Reason 1: When the abdominal muscles do not have enough strength to bear the weight, the abdomen will appear more prominent, especially when the baby is held. In addition, the baby's body is round from front to back, not slightly flat like an adult's, which is one of the reasons why the belly looks bloated.

Reason 2: Babies are more prone to bloating than adults. If the baby eats and sucks too quickly, he will inhale air into his stomach; if the hole of the bottle nipple is not of appropriate size, air will enter the baby's body through the gap in the nipple; in addition, the baby cries excessively and inhales air; drinking milk or other food will produce a lot of gas, which will cause abdominal distension.

If the baby can eat, defecate, does not vomit, has a soft belly, is active, passes gas normally, and gains weight normally, it is functional abdominal distension and no treatment is required.

Reason 3: Indigestion and constipation cause feces to accumulate in the intestines, which promotes the proliferation of gas-producing bad bacteria. Or milk protein allergy, lactose intolerance, enteritis, etc. cause digestion and absorption problems, which easily produce large amounts of gas.

Reason 4: Enlarged organs or tumors in the abdominal cavity, such as hepatosplenomegaly, cirrhosis, etc. The organs and tissues in the abdominal cavity may grow tumors, and the larger the tumor grows, the more it will cause abdominal distension.

The best defense is for mothers to take their children to the hospital for professional check-ups regularly. Finally, mothers should spend more time taking care of their children, observe their symptoms more, be patient and careful enough, adjust their feeding habits, and give their children more massages, which can also effectively prevent big belly.
