Is it normal for a three month old baby to drool?

Many times, babies' saliva will often flow out, and the flow rate is not small. Once we forget to wipe it, the babies' clothes will get wet. Because of concerns about their children's health, many parents become nervous. Experts say that if the baby drools for a long time, the skin will easily become inflamed due to saliva immersion. Is it normal for a three-month-old baby to drool?

The saliva of a newborn baby is only enough to moisten the oral mucosa. In addition, the baby only eats milk or liquid food at this time, which does not stimulate the salivary glands much, and the secretion of the salivary glands is very small, so newborns rarely drool.

It will take about 3 months for the amount of saliva secretion to increase significantly. When the baby is 4-5 months old, the addition of complementary foods plays a vital role in the baby's growth. At this time, foods containing nutrients such as starch are gradually added to the diet. After the salivary glands are stimulated by these foods, saliva secretion increases significantly. In addition, the baby's mouth is small and shallow, and the swallowing reflex function is not yet perfect. He cannot use swallowing movements to regulate saliva. Therefore, when the saliva secretion is a little more or the baby is happy or laughing, he may not be able to swallow all the saliva secreted, and it may overflow the dam and flow out of the mouth. In addition, many babies like to put their fingers, rubber nipples, etc. into their mouths and suck them, which also stimulates the secretion of the salivary glands and increases saliva.

Babies who are 6-7 months old begin to grow their first teeth. When the deciduous teeth erupt, the small teeth push outward from the gums, causing mild swelling and discomfort in the gum tissue, thereby stimulating the nerves on the gums and causing a reflex increase in the secretion of the salivary glands. Therefore, experienced elders will not frown when they see the baby drooling, but will show a very happy expression, because the baby is about to grow teeth, which should be a happy thing.

Finally, it is important to note that if babies spit, parents are reminded not to scold or beat them, as this will only reinforce the behavior. Parents should still provide patient guidance and set a good example.
