When the red blood cells in the human body age, they produce some waste products through metabolism. One of the waste products, called bilirubin, is finally excreted from the body through the liver. In medicine, the concentration of bilirubin in the blood is used to represent the degree of bilirubin accumulation. For example, a bilirubin concentration of 12 mg/dl means that there are 12 mg of bilirubin in 100 cc of blood. When explaining the condition, medical staff will refer to the bilirubin concentration as the "jaundice index". For example, a jaundice index of 12 means the bilirubin concentration is 12mg/dl.

Newborns

The maximum jaundice index of a normal newborn is about 51.3 μmol/L (3 mg/dl), reaching a peak around 4 days after birth. It generally does not exceed 171-205 μmol/L (10-12 mg/dl), and the premature infant does not exceed 256.5 μmol/L (15 mg/dl), and then gradually recovers. The Van den Bleu test is an indirect reaction. Bilirubin in urine is negative, and bile pigment in feces is increased.

Umbilical cord blood ~24h ~28h 3~7dl

Full-term infants <42.8 (2.5) <102.6 (6) <128.3 (7.5) <205.2 (12)

Premature infants <42.8 (2.5) <136.8 (8) <205.2 (12) <265.5 (15)

Many people believe that breastfeeding is related to a high jaundice index, but this is not entirely true. Experts believe that other causes of jaundice must be ruled out before it can be said that jaundice is caused by breast milk. Since jaundice in the previous week may be due to dehydration caused by insufficient feeding, there is no problem if the index is less than 20mg/dL. There has been no literature reporting brain lesions caused by breast milk jaundice, so it is generally not recommended to terminate breastfeeding. However, if the jaundice index exceeds 20mg/dL, you can temporarily stop breastfeeding and use infant formula to supplement. If the jaundice improves within 48 hours and breastfeeding is resumed, the bilirubin may rise slightly by 2 to 4 mg/dL, which will not affect the baby. Jaundice caused by breast milk will completely disappear in about 1 to 3 months.
