I had jaundice and hepatitis when I was a child.

Many people don’t know much about jaundice, or only know a little about it. In fact, many people today have had jaundice hepatitis when they were young. Jaundice is most likely to occur in children. Generally, diarrhea, yellow face, and dark urine will occur when the disease occurs. However, children recover from jaundice very quickly and the course of the disease is very short. This article introduces the related content, let’s learn about it.

Acute hepatitis in children is mostly of the icteric type, which generally develops rapidly and often leads to medical treatment due to systemic or gastrointestinal symptoms. Clinically, it is usually divided into three stages: Pre-jaundice: The course of the disease is short, accompanied by fever in 67% of cases, of which moderate fever accounts for 46%, and some cases have high fever. The fever usually lasts for 1-3 days, and in a few cases it can reach 1 week. Some people may be misdiagnosed as having upper respiratory tract infection due to respiratory symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, cough, and pharyngeal congestion as prodromal manifestations. Gastrointestinal symptoms include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and aversion to greasy food.

Infants often have diarrhea, which may be related to the reduction in the total amount of bile acid in bile and the decline in digestive function. Half of the cases are accompanied by abdominal pain, but the pain is not in the liver area, so it is easy to be diagnosed as intestinal spasm or intestinal ascariasis.

Jaundice stage: The child's body temperature often drops, and the sclera and skin appear yellow. The urine color becomes darker like tea, and in severe cases it becomes soy sauce color. Generally, changes in urine color precede yellowing of the sclera and skin by 3-5 days. Changes in urine color are often one of the main symptoms that attract parents' attention. At this time, gastrointestinal symptoms are alleviated and the liver is significantly enlarged. Some children may have transient splenomegaly and increased serum bilirubin, mainly conjugated bilirubin.

Recovery period: Jaundice and gastrointestinal symptoms disappear faster than in adults, about 7-14 days. Serum bilirubin and ALT generally return to normal after 3-4 weeks, and only in a few cases do they persist for 1-2 months. It takes more than 6 weeks for the liver to shrink back to normal in most children.
