1-year-old baby head circumference standard

After the baby is born, parents are usually very concerned about the baby's growth. Most parents will give their babies regular physical examinations. Many careful parents have found that during the physical examination, they need to measure the baby's head circumference every time. Many parents may not know the significance of measuring head circumference. In fact, the size of the baby's head circumference is closely related to the baby's growth and development.

What is the standard for head circumference at one year old?

From birth to December, the baby's growth rate is very fast. In the blink of an eye, the baby's little head disappeared, replaced by a big round head. The growth of the baby concerns the mother, and the changes in his head circumference are of even greater concern to mothers. If mothers discover abnormalities in the baby's head circumference early, they can intervene early and the baby can grow up healthily.

The average head circumference of a newborn is 34 cm. The growth of head circumference is relatively fast in the first six months after the baby is born. From newborn to adult, the head circumference increases from a dozen centimeters to about 20 centimeters. A baby's head circumference grows fastest between one and three months. The growth rate will gradually slow down in the future. The head circumference of a one-year-old boy is about 46cm, and the head circumference of a one-year-old girl is about 45.5cm. Whether the growth of head circumference is normal reflects whether the brain development is normal. When the brain is underdeveloped, the growth of head circumference is also relatively slow. Hydrocephalus can cause the head circumference to grow too quickly.

Measuring head circumference is an essential item in physical examination. Doctors will record the data of each head circumference measurement. It is also possible for mothers to measure their baby's head circumference at home. As long as the method is correct, mothers can also get the baby's accurate head circumference at home. First, the mother needs to find a soft ruler, find the highest point of the baby's two eyebrows, find a line between the two eyebrows, and use this line as the center point. Place the zero point of the tape measure at the center point as a starting point, and move the tape measure along the eyebrows to the back of the baby's head. Finally, the number at the intersection of the tape measure is the baby's head circumference.

If the baby's head circumference is too large or too small, the doctor will suspect whether the baby has a disease. The doctor will do a detailed examination for the baby and make a final diagnosis based on the baby's other manifestations. At the same time, when the mother measures the baby's head circumference at home, she must first adjust the baby's emotions, keep the baby in a quiet state, and try not to move the baby's head. If you find that your baby's head circumference is too large or too small, you should go to the hospital for examination in time.
