Causes of nasal congestion

1. Skull base fracture

A dural tear can result in cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, which occurs when the patient bends his head. Associated manifestations include epistaxis, otorrhea, and bulging of the eardrum due to blood or fluid. Basilar skull fractures may also cause headaches, facial paralysis, nausea, vomiting, abnormal eye movements, strabismus, hearing loss or blindness, near-constipation, Battle's sign, and raccoon eyes.

2. Cold

The typical symptoms of a common cold are watery nasal discharge accompanied by sneezing and nasal congestion. Swelling of the nasal mucosa may lead to sinus pain, sinusitis, and loss of taste and smell. Associated symptoms include sore throat, general fatigue, myalgia, arthralgia and mild headache.

3. Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism can lead to general hypofunction. This will cause the blood vessels in the nasal mucosa to dilate, causing nasal congestion. Related symptoms include general fatigue, loss of appetite but weight gain, chills, facial edema, memory loss, dry hair, thickening of the skin and tongue, bradycardia, hoarseness, etc.

4. Nose deformity

A deviated septum may cause unilateral or bilateral nasal obstruction, snoring, and postnasal drip. A perforated nasal septum may also cause a blocked nose due to changes in airflow in the nasal cavity.

5. Nasal bone fracture

Nasal congestion can be caused by trauma. Nasal trauma may lead to nasal mucosal edema, nosebleeds, abscesses, nasal septum displacement, etc. Periorbital ecchymosis, edema, nasal deformity, pain, and nasal bone crackling may also occur.
