What to do if your child is timid at school

What to do if your child is timid at school

If a child is timid at school, parents should understand the specific reasons and encourage the child to interact more with strangers in daily life. The child should learn to gradually integrate into the collective atmosphere. If the child gradually improves his self-confidence, parents or teachers should encourage the child more in daily life. Only in this way can the child gradually improve. Let’s take a look at this aspect.

1. Don’t force your baby to interact with strangers

Your baby is shy, so as a parent, it is understandable that you are anxious. However, it is best not to force your baby to interact with strangers. Because forcing babies to call uncle and aunt will increase their xenophobia.

In fact, the two emotions of fear and attachment appear at the same time. When the baby is about 6 months old, he will develop a strong attachment to his mother, and this situation may still exist even when the baby is two or three years old. Another manifestation of attachment is separation anxiety. The baby feels safe in the mother's arms, and becomes anxious when away from the mother. Therefore, when the baby meets a stranger, as long as he is with his mother, he will not show so much fear, or at least, his fear of strangers will be weaker. If the mother talks and laughs with the stranger and can provide appropriate guidance between the baby and the stranger, the baby will gradually like the stranger.

So, in this matter, I suggest that you don't rush it, but create appropriate opportunities to change your baby in your daily life.

2. Create opportunities for your baby to interact with others

The baby always says "I'm afraid of uncles and aunts". This fear hinders her interpersonal communication. You can first eliminate her fear, and then create opportunities for your baby to slowly interact with strangers.

For example, before guests come to your home, prepare your baby mentally: how many guests will there be, who they are, etc. When meeting someone, you don't have to force your baby to call people. You can ask your baby to entertain the guests, give up seats for them, bring them candies, serve them water, etc. When introducing the guests, you can say to the baby in a friendly manner, "This is Aunt XX, who gave you clothes and fed you when you were just born." This will bring the baby closer to strangers to a certain extent. Finally, when seeing off the guests, you can also encourage your baby to say goodbye to the guests and teach your baby to say things like "Uncle and aunt, come and visit us again next time."

When your baby interacts with other children, you can also act as a bridge. However, it is best to help your baby find younger friends so that they can get familiar with each other, and then let them get to know more children through familiar friends, because this can increase the baby's sense of security. Gradually, your baby will learn to take the initiative to play with other children.

3. Encourage your baby to express himself

Some babies are shy and timid because they lack self-confidence. If they can be filled with confidence, they will naturally be less afraid of people. Now that your baby can sing and dance at home, you can build her confidence by having her perform for guests. Of course, you'd better make preparations in advance and communicate with your baby to sing a nursery rhyme taught in kindergarten yesterday in front of adults, or dance a dance that you often dance at home.

Try to encourage your baby to develop her strengths, but if she still isn't happy about it, forget about it.

4. Take your baby out more often

Another reason why babies are afraid of strangers is environmental factors. When a baby is exposed to a few familiar people in a single environment for a long time, he will naturally become more resistant to other people. Therefore, you should change your baby's environment as much as possible: take your baby out more often during holidays, and it is best to have him/her participate in activities with relatives and friends, and have more children play together. As your baby comes into contact with more people, his horizons will broaden and his courage will gradually grow.
