Tigertail is a folk herb in southern Fujian, a subshrubby herb, 1-1.5m tall. The stems are relatively thick and covered with short, coarse hairs. Odd-pinnate compound leaves, stipules are long triangular and broad at the base; leaflets are oblong or ovate-lanceolate, with a larger one at the top. The raceme is terminal, the flowers are dense, the corolla is purple, the ovary is superior, and the style is linear and incurved. The pods have 3-7 nodes and are slightly transparent. Widely distributed in Asia.

Morphological characteristics

Cat's Tail is a subshrubby herb, 1-1.5m tall. The stems are relatively thick and covered with short, coarse hairs. Odd-pinnate compound leaves; petiole 5-10cm long; petiolules about 2mm; stipules long triangular, broad at base; leaflets 3-5, rarely 7; leaflets oblong or ovate-lanceolate, 5-10cm long, 2-4cm wide, with one leaflet at the top being larger, pointed at the apex, rounded or slightly cordate at the base, glabrous above or hairy at the midrib, short hairy on the back, with prominent reticular veins. The raceme is terminal, with densely packed flowers, up to 30cm long; the bracts are lanceolate, broad at the base, with long eyelashes on the edges, the lower bracts are persistent, the upper ones extend above the flowers, and fall off when the flowers bloom; each bract has 2 flowers; the calyx is shallowly forest-shaped, 5-lobed, the upper 2 lobes are shorter, the lower 3 lobes are elongated, all covered with long white stiff hairs, the base of the hairs is drum-shaped; the corolla is purple, 7-8mm long; there are 10 stamens, dissociated, and the one opposite the standard petal is separate; the ovary is superior, and the style is linear and incurved. The pods have 3-7 nodes, the nodes are swollen, slightly transparent, and covered with very short hairs. The flowering period is May-June, and the fruiting period is July-October.

Growth environment

It grows mostly in bushes on slopes in the wilderness, below 1000 meters above sea level.

Produced in Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan and Taiwan. It is also distributed in India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia.
