Newborn baby tears and eye mucus

Newborn baby tears and eye mucus

If a newborn baby sheds tears, you must pay attention to it. There may be eye inflammation. You must pay attention to it at this time. Generally speaking, it is normal to shed tears, but if there is eye mucus at this time, it often indicates that the baby is getting angry or has a bacterial infection. In addition, because it is a newborn baby, you must also be alert to some diseases. The more common ones are dacryocystitis, or nasolacrimal duct obstruction, etc. Let us learn about it.

What to do if the baby has tears and eye mucus

There are many reasons why babies have a lot of eye mucus. Sometimes it may be because the baby is "getting hot", and sometimes it is due to bacterial infection. Here, parents should be reminded that after the baby is born, they should pay special attention to the amount, color and nature of his eye mucus. Sometimes too much eye mucus may be a sign of eye inflammation. If the eye mucus is excessive and sticky, it may be caused by eye disease. Parents should pay more attention to it and not ignore it. If not treated in time, it will affect the visual development of the newborn. So, what should we do if the baby has tears and eye mucus?

1. The baby is getting hot.

If your baby has tears and eye mucus, it means there is heat in the body. It is recommended to give your baby more water and add more vegetables and fruits. It is best to use a humidifier in the house or place a few basins of water in the house to increase the humidity in the house. You can use Tobrex. If there is no improvement, it is recommended to go to the hospital for a check-up.

2. Neonatal dacryocystitis.

Neonatal dacryocystitis, that is, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, 95% of nasolacrimal duct obstruction will disappear within 6 months, and a few will disappear later. Therefore, there is no need to see an ophthalmologist if tearing occurs within 6 months. However, nasolacrimal duct obstruction can induce acute dacryocystitis, making the conjunctival sac secretions non-bacterial mucous secretions at the beginning. If there is a bacterial infection, there may be a large amount of purulent secretions. Therefore, early treatment is required.

3. Nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

In the early stage of nasolacrimal duct obstruction, local compression massage of the lacrimal sac is used, and parents can perform massage treatment at home. The method is: press your fingers toward the nasal cavity to force the lacrimal sac secretions to flush open the closed membrane. After pressing, apply antibiotic eye drops locally to the eyes to prevent infection. Each time, squeeze out the contents of the lacrimal sac before applying eye drops, 2-3 times a day. If continuous massage for 2 weeks is ineffective, you can go to the hospital for pressurized flushing of the tear duct to break the membrane tissue. If it is still ineffective, you can use an effective surgery to cure the disease - tear duct probing. This method is 95% effective for children aged 6-13 months, but the efficacy drops to 75% after 13 months. Therefore, nasolacrimal duct obstruction should be treated early.
