Precautions after phimosis surgery in children

Phimosis has a great impact and harm on adult males. Therefore, after the baby is born, parents must pay attention to the development of the baby's penis. If the baby has phimosis, be sure to take the child to the hospital for examination and treatment as soon as possible. Generally, the method of treating children's phimosis is mainly through surgical treatment. Although phimosis is now a minor operation, the precautions after the operation are still very important.

Notes on recovery after phimosis surgery

1. After phimosis surgery, take anti-inflammatory medication as prescribed by the doctor. The wound should be kept clean and dry after surgery, and be careful not to wet the gauze when urinating. There will be slight pain and bruising at the wound after circumcision surgery. You should take painkillers regularly and it will heal in about 7 to 10 days.

2. After phimosis surgery, parents should pay attention to whether there is bleeding from the wound. If the wound is swollen, painful and bleeding, you can apply local cold compress and pressure to stop the bleeding; if the bleeding is severe, you should return to the hospital immediately for treatment.

3. There are no indications for phimosis surgery but special care is still required.

4. Phimosis surgery generally uses short-term absorbable synthetic sutures and there is no need to remove the sutures. The wound is sutured with absorbable sutures, so there is no need to remove the sutures. Before the wound heals, you should return for regular follow-up examinations.

5. Penile edema is a normal phenomenon after phimosis surgery. Children should wear loose clothes to avoid friction on the penis. If the penis becomes erect, please use one hand to protect the wound and the other hand to pinch the glans hard to hurt it, allowing the penis to naturally subside to prevent the wound from splitting. Change your underwear frequently to avoid infection.

6. After phimosis surgery, the wound is fixed with absorbent gauze. After 3 days, the gauze is removed, the wound is exposed, and it is cleaned with antibiotic ointment and 4% boric acid water.

7. Generally, surgery for phimosis takes 40-60 minutes. Healthy children can have the surgery done in the surgical outpatient clinic without the need for hospitalization. But before the operation, be sure to take a shower and wash the penis and the skin around it. Oral antibiotics are taken after phimosis surgery to prevent infection.

Prevention methods for phimosis in children

Parents should frequently turn over their children's foreskin for cleaning to prevent smegma from forming and sticking to the foreskin. For children with phimosis that cannot be turned over, balloon dilatation can be performed in the early stage to enlarge the external opening of the foreskin so that it can be turned over normally for easy cleaning. After the child grows up, surgical treatment can be performed depending on the situation.

At the same time, experts point out that the best treatment period should be from childhood at the age of 12 to before marriage. This is because the foreskin is too long. The foreskin and phimosis will directly affect the blood supply to the penis, causing poor development of the penis, shortness or even atrophy in adulthood, leading to male infertility and directly affecting the quality of life of men.

1. Repeatedly pull up the foreskin. For congenital phimosis in childhood, the foreskin can be repeatedly pulled up to treat it. The purpose of this is to expand the foreskin opening and prevent the phimosis from becoming more serious.

2. Prevent foreskin penis adhesion and foreskin incarceration. One issue that parents of young children with phimosis need to consider is to prevent adhesion of the foreskin and glans penis, otherwise the phimosis will still exist.

3. Remove smegma. People with phimosis often have smegma, which can cause many men's diseases, such as penile cancer, balanitis, urethritis, etc. Therefore, when the foreskin is turned up to reveal the glans penis, parents should remove the smegma in time, apply antibiotic ointment, and then reposition the foreskin. The purpose of doing this is to prevent the smegma from breeding bacteria and reduce the risk of men's diseases.
